Cyclops 594 – Tumescent Extrovert

More Trump-related, or rather Trump/US-dominated, cruciverbalism from Cyclops…to paraphrase various slogans…’read my lips…four more years’ (minus 50-odd days)…heaven (or your own preferred theological destination) help us…

A few nods to matters more local, and a smuttering of smut to keep it Cyclops-ean…and a hint of the Wacky Races, with DICK(Y) DASTARDLY across the third row…

On reflection, this is more a puzzle of two halves – the Across clues are almost all schoolboy sniggers – underwear, STD, caught in the hay, kinky gaiters, sex ring, penis, shag, horny thing, having got firm, and Will’s appendage…whereas the Downs are primarily political, with references to Trump, Donald, Tony, May, Brenda, Putin, Washington and Remain…but not a mention for poor old Nicola Sturgeon this time round…

My personal favourite was 23A – RHINO (horny thing’s ready!)..fnarr fnarr…followed by 6D’s reference to the reliability of EXIT POLLs…

  1. 14A – you have the ‘start’ indicating DTS (Donald, Trump, Starts), but this has ‘starts’ referring to itself – and supplies an ‘S’ too many.
Shouldn’t the words indicated be Day, Donald & Trump (DDT)?

  2. Thanks mc_rapper_67 – I couldn’t parse 23a and 28a. 23a I hadn’t heard of Rhino meaning money before but it had to be the solution.
28a I didn’t pick up on bones = doc. I remember Captain Kirk of Star Trek naming Dr McCoy ‘bones’. Is it a general slang term for a doctor?

  3. Franco! Indeed it is. Not sure what the etymology is. Suspect something like bonemender.
I was kicking myself for not getting Papua (I had the ==pua too!) and also missing henpeck…. so straightforward. First time in ages, I have not completed! But a most enjoyable solve, overall.

  4. Chambers has ‘bones’ as informal/nickname for a doctor. It doesn’t seem to give a derivation, but I believe it is from ‘sawbones’, which is also in Chambers as slang for a doctor/surgeon – a grisly description of what they sometimes do!…

  5. A short form of Sawbones. First OED example is: “1837 Dickens Pickwick Papers xxix. 307 ‘What! don’t you know what a Sawbones is, Sir?’ enquired Mr. Weller; ‘I thought every body know’d as a Sawbones was a Surgeon.’”

  6. Thank you all re ‘bones’
Re 19d -Have to confess that although I had henpeck, I’d used some very tortuous (and incomplete) logic in that a pecker could be a hen and pecker was somehow lengthening the word. It’s a wonder I can sleep at night!
