YORK S&B weekend 27-29th October 2017 – Update

A message from John Henderson:

Here’s my end-of-summer update and request for details, slightly different to last year, but easier for everyone, I hope! Even if you have indicated attendance/accommodation details in the spring announcement, please would you give your A-E details in a post hereinunder.

Edit 25/10/17: Details of the Friday night ‘ale trail’ can be found here (map) and here (text).

Edit 30/9/17: Please see John’s comment #31.

1 ACCOMMODATION. Please deal directly with Fay Waudby-Green and quoting “S&B Event” at fay.waudby@yorkracecourse.co.uk (Tel: 01904 709174). She has kindly held room rates at last year’s £45 (single room) and £70 (twin room). You need to make your arrangements with her soon, as the racecourse accommodation has now joined booking.com and will fill up any unclaimed places fast!

What I need to know: nothing – unless you have difficulty contacting Fay.

2 FRIDAY ALE TRAIL. Meet for a 6pm start at York Tap (by Platform 3 at York Station), route TBA.

What I need to know:
A: Names of people attending (for name badges);
B: How many of those named in A would like to partake of food at Pub 2 (7-8pm) – sandwiches, chips etc (£2pp, to be collected at main event below).

3 SATURDAY MAIN EVENT. From 11am at The Fox & Roman, Tadcaster Rd. Note that the pub is open from 9 for breakfast (serving alcohol from 10!).

What I need to know:
C: Names of people attending (for name badges);
D: How many of those named in C would like to partake of the hot and cold buffet (£8pp);
E: Special food requirements for anyone named in C.

Please post in the style of:

A: John Sprat & Jane Sprat
B: 2
C: John Sprat & Jane Sprat
D: 2
E: no seafood/nut products (JoS); no meat, no dairy (JaS)

4 TRAVEL. Thanks to Sil for this early warning: if you are coming from the South and particularly on routes via Grantham, including East Midlands trains, Grand Central and (probably, most importantly) Virgin Trains East Coast from London, please check your route. Maybe travel on Friday?

(Only) on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 October there will be major disruption when coming from the South. Trains cannot go via Grantham, the station will be closed. This means fewer trains, perhaps, and also delays of up to 70 minutes, and some bus replacement services.

I think that’s all, but I’ll update as necessary. Thanks, everyone – looking forward to seeing you all.

John

Further to travel information, from London I suggest travelling from St Pancras, change at either Derby or Sheffield (there is one through train on Saturday, but probably not very convenient). And Crosscountry trains from the south and southwest via Birmingham appear to be running more or less normally.

    Hi John,

I’ll be there for the Saturday only – no food required.

There will be a bus service between Grantham and Newark which doesn’t appear to add too much to the rail travelling time.

    Morning John

I did indicate in the spring that I would be coming, but I have double booked myself for the 28th, so won’t now be able to make it. Put me down as apologies for absence. Hope you all have a great time, and see everyone at the next Midlands one that Eileen is organising for Leicester next spring.

  28. Kathryn's Dad

When I said Eileen will be organising one in the spring, I meant I will. If anyone is interested. We’ll see nearer the time.

  30. Verlaine

Does anyone know if the accommodation possibilities have now expired, or if it’s still worth getting in touch?

  31. John H

Thanks to all who have replied so far. October tomorrow, so I need to push you a little bit to let me know if you are intending to attend. We can organise food etc right up until the last few days before the Saturday event, but could I urge you to let Fay know at the Racecourse if you require accommodation there (that one’s getting urgent!), and to let me know (not so urgent, but in the next 10 days, say) if you intend to join the Quiz Pub Crawl on Friday 27th?

    Great! Cheers,

    John H

  36. Matthew Marcus

I realised that “Yes please” and “sure” are not numbers, but please treat them in a pseudo-Boolean fashion and consider them both to be “1”.

I am definitely planning to be at the Quiz Pub Crawl, anyway.

  44. JimS

    Hi John

A couple of questions / thoughts.

    1. I don’t know if you have any talks planned for the Saturday event, but I see (prompted by today’s Guardian puzzle) that you’re giving a talk today on “This Cryptic World”. Might it be feasible for you to repeat this, or extracts from it, on the Saturday? I’m sure that those of us not able to hear it today would be really interested.

    2. At the Friday night pub quiz last year there was some heated debate among team members as to whether recourse to iphones, google etc was permitted. What is the official line on this please?

  45. Jenny and Charles

John, although we did say we would be there, events have overtaken us so we can’t make it. You always organise an enjoyable weekend. Have fun everybody.

    E Non-dairy

  59. Vavatch

John – sorry for the late notice but Alcina’s work commitments this week and next mean we can’t realistically get up to York and back in time. Let me know if you’ve committed money for the grub and we’ll chip in anyway.

  60. Michael Hodgkin

I will still be there on Friday eve, but due to a change of transport plans I have a non-refundable ticket on the 1508 from Kings X arr 1729 if anyone wants to take it off my hands – and can get it tomorrow.

  61. Monk

  63. Encota

    Hi John,

Apologies I won’t be able to make it as I already had plans ‘darn saaf’ for this weekend. Have a great time – plus please pass on my thanks to Anax for a splendid ‘event’ puzzle, which I had a go at yesterday: Top Job!

  65. Peter Chamberlain

Saturday only, Peter definitely, Jeannie probably, no food

  66. dirkybee

Sorry I can’t make York this year. Many happy returns, maestro x

  67. Bufo

Sorry I won’t be coming. I’ve got a nasty cough that I don’t want to inflict on anyone.

  68. allan_c

I’m in much the same state as Bufo@67, so I think it unlikely that I’ll make it either.

However, I’ve prepared a crossword which Sil will be blogging on Sunday on 15^2, and he will no doubt post a link to enable folk to attempt it before reading the blog. But if anyone wants a pdf of it before then please e-mail me at this address: exit[dot]xword[at]virginmedia.com

Hope you all have a great time. Let me know, John, if I need to chip in to the food kitty.

    Cheers

    allan_c, aka exit

  69. Sorry I can’t make it tomorrow – hope a good time is had by those that can.

  70. Nora Boswell

Well, that was great fun. Many thanks to all concerned and I’ll be keeping an eye out for next year.

    Very best wishes.

    Nora

  71. beery hiker

A quick thankyou to John and Jane for another great weekends, and thanks to everyone else who helped to make it so enjoyable.

  72. Eileen

Difficult to know where to post this comment, now that York S and B has disappeared from the front page – I see that George has posted under General Discussion but I think not many people visit there.

Anyway, I have to say huge thanks to John and Jane for a super day out yesterday – I loved every minute of it, as ever. xx

  73. Many thanks to John and Jane for organising another great do. Much fun was had by me and Ma and Pa Hoskins had a super time too and came back with glowing praise for such a lovely bunch of people. Roll on next year. 🙂
