Ribald fun from Hoskins as usual. Nice one, as they say. Olive Drab new to me, and only knew Gabba as an Aussie cricket ground so maybe a conga-style dance while carrying a tray of beers….. Maybe not. Thanks Harry for the workout and Scchua for the detail.
Usual fun crossword from Harry for which many thanks. Just the right level for an iOS I think – mainly straightforward but a few trickier ones thrown in. Didn’t know GABBA. Maybe I’m not hip to the groove. Next thing, people will say nobody speaks like that any more.
Thanks to Hoskins and scchua.
I always look forward to Hoskins’ offerings and wasn’t disappointed with this one.
I think the (crossword loving) crowd at the GABBA would let TACTICIAN for ‘strategist’ go through to the keeper without too much comment.
Don’t know if I’d really call it a favourite but the idea of a baby being stuck in rich stew was certainly very er… original and I don’t think I’ll look at a HIGHCHAIR in quite the same way again!
For something a bit less macabre, I loved the ‘nuts’ in 8d and the ‘small, frozen danglers’ in 18d. Just a coincidence I’m sure.
Thank you to Hoskins and scchua.
Must admit this wasn’t my favourite Hoskins’ offering. Rather too many self-references and I think 24a could have been somewhat off-putting for anyone new to solving Indy puzzles.
Ah well – Harry is Harry and he’s often very amusing so thanks to him anyway and also to scchua for the blog.
OLIVE DRAB and GABBA were new to me too.
I agree with WordPlodder’s comments @3. Was amused by the small frozen danglers in 18d, so why 8d was my last in I can’t imagine. What kind of nuts were they likely to be?
Usually when a setter makes multiple references to themself in a puzzle it feels like too much ego and is tedious.
Not so with Hoskins.
He offers himself up in the grid for our entertainment and invites us to laugh at him. I for one can’t help but laugh. But not at him. Just at the brilliantly funny clues.
Thanks Hoskins – I do hope you are able to return to the fifteensquared trolley soon – and thanks to scchua for the blog.
Good fun with a number of laugh out loud moments at 16d 8d and 18d. I enjoyed this puzzle a lot. Thanks Harry and Scchua.
Enjoyable and amusing as you’d expect from Hoskins. Agree with Kitty about the self-references.
Thanks to Harry and scchua.
What Kitty said.
Shameless fanboy here. Came to check parse for 11a,24a (kicking self), 4d (mental block on canoodling=petting despite Chambers)
The finest surfaces and most fun I’ve had since the last Hoskins.
Harry, please can I buy a book/app/pack of your puzzles? Happy to do the techy legwork to facilitate if it helps make it happen.
What Kitty said too! Great way to end the week.
Thanks Harry and scchua.
I found this on the tough side but not too much of a grind. Getting 15ac and 8dn back to back helped, as they both made me smile.
