I parsed 17a as POLAR (freezing) around PU (Papa, you).
Thanks to Hoskins and scchua.
Took a while to parse 1a and to register the anagram indicator in 9a. Then got into a real pickle with 13a – I was trying to relate it to Bon Jovi. Haven’t come across BOJO before, closest I could get was a BOZO. Also drew a blank over the second definition of 27a – all I could think of was the colour of the tops on old-fashioned (and much missed) glass milk bottles.
Parsed 17a in the same way as Hovis.
Thanks to Harry and to Scchua for the much needed decryption.
Jane, you might not be too far off the mark with Bozo. 🙂
Thanks Hoskins – much fun. Particularly liked UNDERWEAR, STRIPED, INDIE (appropriate), and of course IGNORAMUS since I would join the critics, also ADEPT and many more.
Thanks scchua, I missed the ‘N ALL.
All solved eventually, the NW corner holding out longest, and we couldn’t parse INDIE. Several of Hoskins’ trademark sex and drugs references but we thought they were nicely restrained – pitched just about right. Favourites were IGNORAMUS and UNDERWEAR.
Thanks, Hoskins and scchua.
I always love Harry’s crosswords even if i can’t finish. Outre was a tad unfair to newcomers but if th wrt solved the others it should be ok.
