  1. Found this harder than the usual ios it all the better for that. Particularly liked the double treat in 5d. Also liked the Spoonerism at 7a.

Having said that, there were some clues I didn’t care for. I thought the clue for EVANGELIST was barely cryptic and the DD for KILLER was poor. I always thought BARK was the US spelling for BARQUE (my Collins agrees with me) but, to be fair to Tees, my Chambers has no such indication.

Had to cheat with JUVENAL. Never heard of him but should really have guessed it from the clue.

Thanks to Tees and to scchua.

  2. Marginally slower solve than Dada’s (I presume) offering in the ST and a DNF as I didn’t try to cheat on the satirist and just came to the blog for the answer. So, thank you to Tees and Scchua and agreed with Hovis, 5 down was Capital 🙂

  3. I also failed with JUVENAL – I did a word search and it came up but didn’t leap out to me as the answer so thanks to scchua for digging that one out – and for the illustrations as well. I also liked CURRY SAUCE and METROPOLIS as well. I wasn’t convinced about KILLER. Thanks to Tees as well.

  4. An enjoyable mixture – a few write-ins (CURRY SAUCE, AIDE-DE-CAMP, CURB, BRIE, ASIA et al) and some that needed quite a bit of Tees-ing out (pun intended) such as ELECTORATE and TABERNACLE.  Fortunately we knew JUVENAL, but we struggled a bit in the SE corner – we got an idea from ‘unending in distance’ that 26ac might be ‘infinite’ or ‘infinity’ with ‘nit’ being the ‘fool’, not that we could parse it, till BARK and CLAM showed us the error of our ways.  And we couldn’t parse EWE – the best we could think of was that W is a bit of a zig-zag.

But we solved it all in the end.  Thanks, Tees and scchua.

  5. allan_c@6 – one person’s write in is another’s last one in – CURRY SAUCE (JUVENAL excepted). 🙂

  6. Took me awhile to get 4dn, but I had heard of him.  Don’t have a classical education but he did come up with that famous line “Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?” – Who will guard the guards.  I have read an English translation of the satire that quote comes from and it’s all about men being so afraid that their wives are going to be unfaithful they lock up their women and put guards on the door.

  7. Hello. Thanks for doing the IoS. Thanks for contribs, and to sschua for his insightful and sumptuous blog.

Am tardy coming in due to giggery down in old Southampton over the weekend.

    Cheers
