For 4a I had GRAVE (thoughtful) inside END (purpose).
Parsed 4a as passerby. Also had 2d as BRA IN WASH. The pipe in 30a should be FLUE.
I had 4a and 2d the same as passerby and Hovis @1&2. I didn’t get the parsing of SEASONING though, as I couldn’t see beyond shanty (town) and completely overlooked (sea) shanty.

But I did like DEARTH, trying to think of some alternative world in which ‘D’ = ‘Down’ and, when the penny dropped, feeling like CrossWorld’s daftest geek.

Actually found this a little more challenging than usual from this setter. Didn’t see the hidden answer at 1a (justified it more as a brick being a part of the fabric of a house, but there you go … just a clever hidden !). Also couldn’t parse POSSESSION after not knowing the SOP abbreviation for ‘soprano’. Did have the parsing of 2d and 4a as the consensus of posters though.
Thought that the clue for SEASONING was very good with BRAINWASH not all that far behind.
Finished in the SW corner and with LASAGNE and CHAPEL as my last, maybe I was just having a slow day at the solve !!
