  1. Thanks Hectence and scchua

Very nice. I think the “one” in 13d is fine.

I particularly liked the surface for DEFT.

  2. This was fun – thanks Hectence! I giggled at OODLES (which suddenly hit me after I’d spent an age trying to find out whether “ooches” was a proper word), and I also enjoyed solving JAMBOREE, UPLIFTED and AVENUE. Thanks also to Scchua for explaining the parsing of ASTON VILLA and WEBSITE – both of which I’d simply guessed from the crossers. Nice week all!

  3. Thanks Hectence and scchua.

In 18d, I read the wordplay as ‘finished’ = UP (as in ‘your time’s up’), and ‘in front’ as a redundant indicator that UP precedes the LIFTED part of the answer. Still not the best of clues. Also, URL and WEBSITE, though related, are not the same thing. But otherwise it was straightforward and enjoyable enough.

  4. Agreed that this was fun, with just enough misdirection to provoke a bit of thought. I parsed 18d as did beaulieu@6. The ‘arrived’ in 13d and URL = website were not quite spot on, but in both cases the intent was clear, so no complaints, especially given so many other excellent clues. Thanks to Hectence and Scchua.

  5. Thanks to Hectence and scchua for an enjoyably crafty puzzle and as usual an elegant blog.

Shirl@3: and now Villa are indeed a top-grade football team – well done Hectence!
