I found this a bit tougher than most Quiptics, but it all yielded in the end. I thought that NETHER and GROUNDWORK stood out among a number of clever clues. Didn’t know LISTERIA, but the cluing was clear enough to make it gettable. I had parsed “public school boy” in 1a as ETON + IAN, but Scchua’s explanation is much better.
Thanks to Pan and Scchua.
I thought this was more difficult than today’s Cryptic. I didn’t know INHUME, although I suppose I should have thought about the opposite to exhume. Pity about SHED and SHE-DEVIL, but perhaps that’s OK in a Quiptic.
I liked GROUNDWORK and EXCISE.
Thanks Pan and scchua.
New for me were HAWSER, LISTERIA, INHUME – I know ‘exhume’ but had never seen ‘inhume’ before today.
My favourites were NETHER, BARRED, DAM BUSTERS.
Thanks Pan and scchua.
DaveinNCarolina and Robi, I’ve deleted your spoilers. (I’m one of the spoilees.)
Nice puzzle. I got less of it than I did of today’s cryptic.
Ether is an anesthetic, but it doesn’t make you numb, it puts you to sleep. Novocaine, for instance, is a number.
I found this a fair challenge – quite a few clues took some thinking about. It’s a poor grid, rapidly becoming 4 separate puzzles. A bit of editing on “she-devil” would have improved it immensely (but we have had Arachne and Paul appear recently in clues) but I liked a number of the (albeit simple) envelopes and the surfaces were frequently amusing and slick. Many thanks Pan and also scchua for illustrating it.
“Mandrake” takes me back to seeing a performance of Machiavelli’s “La Mandragola” at the National Theatre in 1984, a production which featured a rather lewd fountain scene…
Thanks Pan and scchua
An enjoyable crossword, but not a Quiptic!
Favourites were EXCISE and NETHER.
Valentine @5
I bet ETHER has been a number for as long as I’ve been doing cryptic crosswords! Whatever next? A goat isn’t a butter and a candle isn’t wicked …? 😉
Some lovely surfaces: I particularly liked GROUNDWORK and EMULSION – and the pictures of Shed and Professor Stephenson!
Thanks, Pan, for an enjoyable puzzle and Scchua for the blog.
