A misprint in the definitions of each clue. An unclued entry and 23 cells to highlight. Should be fun.
My first thought was that this was at the easier end of the difficulty spectrum. A large number of clues fell at the first reading, but some of the other clues took a bit of brain power to crack and whilst most of the misprints were obvious, a few took a little deduction (19ac baffled me for a while). They eventually revealed:
- RINCEWIND
- DEATH
- VIMES
- GRANNY WEATHERWAX
The four characters produced by the corrected letters in the definitions. I was vaguely familiar with Granny Weatherwax, it’s teh sort of name that sticks in the memory banks, but did use the net to confirm the others. All from the Discworld series of novels by Terry Pratchett. DISCWORLD being the unclued entry.
And as per the universe in which the novels are set it is perched on:
..FOUR.. ....E... ...LEP.. G.HANTS. .RETATIN ..A..U..
i.e.
Four elephants on the back of the giant tortoise “Great A’Tuin”.
I must admit having only read a few of his books – having read Douglas Adams first, they lacked the really deep insight I was hoping to find, and I delved no further.
The title is an anagram of PRATCHETT.
Thanks Vismut for a relatively easy afternoon and a well thought out end game.

Managed to find time to do an “extra-curricular” EV and much enjoyed it. Had a little struggle finding the turtle as I had forgotten it had a name, let alone what that name was. Google to the rescue there.
Thanks to Vismut and twencelas.
A lovely tribute to the late, great Sir Terry. My only disappointment was that Cut-me-own-throat Dibbler didn’t make an appearance.
What a shame that once again an excellent EV puzzle has attracted so few comments. The lucid and succinct blog deserves more recognition too, even though I couldn’t disagree more with the blogger’s opinion of Sir Terry!
I fear EV setters and bloggers must wonder why they bother sometimes, but I hope they will persevere for those of us who do appreciate their work. 🙁
Cut -me-own-throat Dibbler was out buying some sausages inna bun.
