YORK S&B weekend 25-27th October 2019 – New Posting

Update 24/10/19 – Details of the Friday night Ale Trail can be found here.

If you still have a name badge from a previous event please remember to bring it with you.

17/10/19 – An update from John Henderson:

There are only 4 rooms left at Wheatlands Lodge (twins at £90 B&B, so £45 if you find a sharer). All rooms will be released to the general public on Sunday. It was going to be Saturday, but there will be a general invitation beside the Inquisitor in this weekend’s i.

The Friday quiz route, which is slightly different to last year, will be published here next week along with a map. Round 1 meeting time/place remains 6pm at the York Tap (north end of York Station, Platform 3), we have food arranged (again, same as last year) at Brigantes (pub 2) at 7pm.

I would welcome early arrivals at the York Tap to help reserve tables, please email me or leave a message on the thread.

Prices: £2 p.p. for the Friday night buffet to be collected on Saturday; £8 p.p. for the buffet on Saturday.

If you haven’t already posted your requirements on the thread below, please do so – even if you are not having food – we need to know numbers occupying chairs and tables.

Just the one birthday card on Sunday please.

A message from John Henderson:

Here’s my end-of-summer update and request for details; comments posted here will form the basis for catering numbers at the Friday and Saturday events. Even if you have previously indicated attendance or accommodation requirements, please would you do the following and give your A-E attendance details in a post hereinunder.

1 ACCOMMODATION. Please deal directly with Wheatlands Lodge, *quoting “S&B” at www.wheatlandslodge.co.uk (Tel: 01904 654318). Fiona and Tim – who are in charge of a wonderfully located family-run hotel – have kindly reserved twin rooms at £90 each (so £45pp if you’d like to pair up!), Bed & Breakfast. You need to make your arrangements VERY soon. Tim and Fiona have warned that they will start releasing unbooked S&B rooms, a few at a time, at the start of October.

*NB Some people have tried to book, not quoted S&B and have been told that the hotel is fully booked.

What I need to know: nothing – unless you have difficulty contacting the hotel.

2 FRIDAY ALE TRAIL. Meet for a 6pm start at York Tap (by north end of Platform 3 at York Station), route TBC – but slightly different from last year.

What I need to know:

A: Names of people attending;
B: How many of those named in A would like to partake of food at Brigantes (114 Micklegate, Pub 2 at 7-8pm) – sandwiches, chips etc (up to £5pp, to be collected at main event below).

3 SATURDAY MAIN EVENT. From 11am at The Fox & Roman on Tadcaster Road. I shall update on opening times and breakfast serving times for people who (a) are extra-thirsty; and or (b) want some early peace and quiet with the morning’s crosswords before others arrive.

What I need to know:

C: Names of people attending (for name badges);
D: How many of those named in C would like to partake of the hot and cold buffet (£8-10pp);
E: Special food requirements for anyone named in C.

Please post in the style of:

A: John Sprat & Jane Sprat
B: 2
C: John Sprat & Jane Sprat
D: 2
E: no seafood/nut products (John); no meat, no dairy (Jane)

I think that’s it, but I’ll update as necessary. Thanks, everyone – looking forward to seeing you all!

John

  14. I have to say at this late stage that I shall not be attending. Important business elsewhere. Very sad about this. Once the Brexit rubbish is over, life can get back to normal I hope. I would really like to meet so many people whose comments online I enjoy and respect, and who sound like great fun, but I shall be voluntarily working on 26th Oct to get a better government.

  15. Just thought I’d let you know I can’t be there as I’ll be in Spain next week. Never stayed in York, but I’ve passed through it many times on the train to London. I’ve heard the bars in the old town centre are a bit of a shambles. My apologies for that.

  16. A: Paul Drury

    B: 1

    I won’t be at the main event but I will be in York that weekend seeing my daughter at the university so I will drop in to the Friday to say hello and have something to eat.

  17. Looking at the names above, both those I’ve met and those I haven’t, I’m really disappointed that I can’t make it this year.

    Thanks to John and Jane (and Tess) for organising, and all the best to everyone who’s there. Have a great time, and a glass or three for me.
