Just right for a pleasant solve before Sunday lunch. HOLDING for ‘farm’, WALKER and BANSHEE (I took a while to see ‘looms over’ as a containment indicator) held me up a bit but the rest went in steadily enough.
Favourites were the ‘dippy soldiers’ in EGGCUP and the economical ROSE triple definition.
Thanks to Dill and scchua
Took me a while to sort out the right word for ‘put up’ but OK otherwise. I think the setter has upped her game slightly but perhaps it’s just me having an off day!
I’ll go with WordPlodder and nominate ROSE as my favourite.
Thanks to Dill and to scchua for the review.
Once I saw Q X W Y and Z appear, I was convinced (and therefore wasted a bit of time looking for) we were in for a pangram.
If only Dill has made 11a “Ejected” !
Lovely puzzle though so thanks to him/ her and of course Scchua
Like @gsolphotog we thought it must be a pangram and with only 3dn unsolved were hunting in both Chambers and Collins for a suitable word with a J in it. No luck, of course, and a case of Doh! when a wordfinder turned uo NOCTURNE as the only possibility.
An enjoyable solve, though. Favourites were EGCUP, BEDSTEAD and QUASI.
Thanks, Dill and scchua.
Thanks to scchua and Dill
Re @2 considerably upped, developed, refined etc.
Just a couple of things I wasn’t sure about:
12a I know the temptation is almost irresistable, but I’m not sure “over” works before US.
5d Now this might seem picky but it struck me immediately in solving. “Over” is an established containment indicator and would have done the job by itself. The addition of “looms”, while adding to the surface, suggests that “bane” hovers above “she”, rather than envelops it.
Both are fairly technical points though. Def @13a particularly nice.
is there a theme?
Lot of Football players, Sterling, Sane, Martial, Rose
Well spotted.
Pique, Stones, Hazard, Bale, Holding, Walker.
White, perhaps?
Pique, Bale,Hazard, Success….

Re 12A: what about ‘inverted commas’?
