A message from John Henderson
It will come as no surprise that I am currently unable to organise the usual York S&B weekend this year. Every time I try to fix something, the rules change, as they have today with the Rule of Six.
Additionally, pubs are operating current government guidelines, meaning that they are unable to take any bookings more that a month ahead. Quite a while back, I abandoned the idea of the Friday night pub quiz crawl – I haven’t even been into the City since lockdown myself – but was thinking that maybe we could do something in the area around the Fox and Roman, and similarly on the usual Saturday afternoon.
However, I do have some good news. Fay Waudby-Green is still holding the block booking I made last year for accommodation at Stableside on Friday 30th and 31st October. If you’d like to take a gamble on whether we will be able to do something puzzle-oriented on that weekend, or even if you simply wish to take advantage of a cut-price weekend in our fine city, do by all means contact Fay, quoting S&B when booking. All the details are here: http://www.stablesideyork.co.uk/. Please note that, for the first time since York S&B began, these dates do not coincide with the clocks going back – that will have happened the previous weekend!
As usual, if you do book in at Stableside – or indeed elsewhere in York, please leave a note below, so that I can keep tabs on numbers and act appropriately nearer the time. I will certainly update this post if there is any further information to impart.
Fingers crossed! Keep well, everyone.
John
Well done, John, on keeping one of the most enjoyable events of the crossword calendar going, albeit in a necessarily reduced capacity. If the numbers are manageable, and if the second wave hasn’t hit us by then, I’ll certainly join you at the F&R on Saturday, though I probably won’t be staying over on this occasion.
I’ll book at the Holiday Inn over the road for Friday/Saturday. Thanks as always for organizing, much appreciated.
Thanks John, I’ll keep watching for further news.
Cath and I have booked at Stableside, if nothing else we’ll just have a quiet weekend away 🙂
If anything does happen on the Saturday, I will make it a day trip by train. Thanks for the update John.
Shame, but understandable given the circs John. If the technology permits, perhaps you could livestream six pints of a decent ale at about 4.6% abv down to The Black Forest?
Love to Jane, best wishes Rob
Hello John the Quiz it’s Sachin!
You used to bug me so much about doing the crossword, saying that you knew I’d like it but I would give you the eyes up. Well I am obsessed now, although still not very good. I do the FT mostly and some others if I can. I realised last week from the comments in here when I came in to cheat that it was your crossword I had struggled with. I had answered five or six I recall. One day I will knock yours on the head and make you proud.
I remembered that you had moved to York. We have a voucher for a trip there to be used before the end of the year. Hope all is going well there. We are in East Finchley now.
Hello John
Given the current circumstances, I wonder what may be possible but as I live just outside York I will be able to come along to anything you can arrange.
Even if it is just a “virtual” meet I would love to have a go at any S&B puzzles you have in the pipeline.
Hi John,
As of tomorrow, I’m not allowed to travel more than 5km so I won’t be able to be there.
Let’s hope for better in 2021.
Hello John,
Covid restrictions apart, I won’t be fit to come next week; do hope we can go ahead next year
Thanks again for all your hard work and best wishes for a happy birthday (tomorrow?).
