I was stumped by 3 down. Where does rock come from?
Otherwise enjoyable puzzle.
Actually, it is 2dn. If you ROCK or agitate or anagram the letters of PIGEON, you get ‘one pig’. Gentle shaking will do.
An enjoyable outing from Bradman today with favourites including MAGELLAN, NAGASAKI and EDWARD LEAR.
Noticed that the FT’s layout today meant that the two hidden clues at 10a and 26d didn’t immediately pop out but they didn’t elude me for long, unlike 2d which was a fail. Nor was MILLINER familiar to me in this sense but at least it fit the crossers.
Thanks to Bradman and Turbolegs.
Thanks, for that, Rishi. Not stirred, then!
All pretty smooth sailing, working from the bottom up, until I became stuck in the NW. I had trouble with LAGOON, the SAKI bit of NAGASAKI and the sneaky hidden RACK which helped with my last in, the clever reverse anagram clue for ROCK PIGEON.
I particularly liked the surface for EDWARD LEAR and the ‘one producing tiles’ def for MILLINER.
Not as hard as yesterday’s Pasquale, but definitely needed some thought to solve.
Thanks to Bradman and Turbolegs
Thanks very much Rishi . Something new to me.
Wordplodder @5,
Yes, now that I know ‘hats’ are ’tiles’, I admire it too! I have, however, seen a saki and found that city fascinating.
Overall this crossword satisfied me with SENECA as my favourite clue. I failed at ROCK PIGEON and thought the surface for 3a was a bit clumsy. Thanks to both.
Sorry — I meant 3d, not 3a.
Yes Diane@4
With 2 olives!
btw, BARI did me in. I don’t mind. Thanks Bradman and Turbolegs.
Thanks Bradman and Turbolegs
Found this one of the easiest puzzles that I have done by this setter – may have just been a wavelength thing, but it was just a steady parade of filling in the answers. Was able to get the two long phrases quite early on so that probably helped a lot.
A couple of new words – the Italian city, the American jazz bandleader and the bird at 2d but all were very clearly clued that was confident that they were so before checking them.
Finished in the NW corner with BARI, RACK and ROCK PIGEON the last few in.
