Very much like the new layout!
Yes new clean appearance in 15**2.
I am solving guardian in order and just reached 28078 and for first time seen “comments closed”. My comment when I make them, rarely, are postscripts I suppose but I like to contribute.
Was going to add re 28078 that, not for first time a blogger thinks pants=trousers is US but trousers=pants all my life in N England. I’m 64.
Timtimmytim @2
To significantly reduce the amount spam I have to go through each day, to check for false positives, I have closed posts over six weeks old to new comments. I’m sorry if this doesn’t give you the opportunity to add a postscript but only I, and the original blogger, are likely to see one.
Gaufrid@3
No, I see them too if it’s a post I’ve commented on, because I take a feed from such posts and some time ago stopped bothering to cancel the feed from old blogposts. Currently, I have about 240 live feeds from 15^2. Now I know you’re closing comments after 6 weeks, I can go through them deleting any which are older.
I’ve just recently discovered this site, and as a novice who struggles to solve one crossword per week it’s super helpful!! My go-to crossword is the Observer’s Everyman. Is the solution/parsing for that only published on this site after the next week’s paper is published? I could do with some help mid-week! Many thanks for creating/maintaining this site. Much appreciated.
Gordon @5
Welcome to 15². In normal times the Everyman is a prize puzzle so we don’t publish a blog until after the closing date for entries. When prize submissions ceased in the early days of the first lockdown, for various reasons I decided to keep to the existing schedule of blog publication dates for all puzzles that were previously prize ones.
Really appreciate the site. Ee find it a wonderful source of clarification.
Us Kiwis also like to leave comments but the Everyman 3689 from 13th December was closed for comments. We only got it today in our Saturday paper on 24th January.
Could you leave comments open a little longer?
As a fellow Kiwi using the NZ Herald to complete the Everyman crossword and following this blog (now six week later), I fully support Alan and Cath with their comment above!
Alan and Cath @7, DexterC @8
My apologies. When I checked previous blogs for comments from NZ it appeared that you were 5 weeks behind so I set the ‘close comments’ time to 6 weeks. I have now extended it to 8 weeks so 3869 is open again.
Where is the solution entry for FT 16685 by MUDD?
Michael Lynch-Gardner @10
The blog of FT16,685 will be published on 28/1/2021, in line with keeping to our schedule of posts prior to the cessation of prize puzzles.
Michael Lynch-Gardner @10
PS. It would have been more polite to have included a ‘please’, rather than a straight demand.
Thank you Gaufrid.
Hi Gaufrid. The new site design is excellent. I tend to print out 10 or so of the Guardian daily cryptic and do them leisurely while watching sports or listening to music in the evening. And I refuse to give up easily on the tougher ones. Thus I fall behind and it’s great to be able to check back at 15×15. As a Canadian I often fail at particularly UKish clues (e.g. an actors name from an old sitcom or a reviled politico) so your site is a wonderful resource. Thanks!
Ed @14
Thanks for the feedback. I’m very pleased to hear that you like the new theme and that you find the site useful.
Re. “comments are closed” — I have been disappointed to see this applied to the Independent crosswords that reappear in the “i” some years later.
John E @16
The appropriate place to post a comment relating to a puzzle published in the i is on the relevant blog at https://idothei.wordpress.com/
Gaufrid, a belated thanks for extension of Everyman comment cut-off!
Likewise. This makes our Sunday.
Hi Gaufrid – is the blog for today’s FT 16,702 (Wanderer) MIA?
Thanks.
Steve
I’ve just posted an analysis of the clues.
May I ask why there is no blog for the Guardian Cryptic 28,352 (Vlad)? I’m interested to know what people thought of it.
Dougal Jeffries @22
There is a blog for that puzzle. It can be found here.
Thank you so much Gaufrid. I couldn’t find it when I searched the list of Guardian cryptics. As a relative newcomer to your site I am learning a huge amount from the blogs and discussions , as well as being entertained.
The solution to the Paul Guardian Prize 28362 is in full view for anyone who accesses the site. This is a major spoiler!
The comments section doesn’t store my username/email despite me ticking the “remember” box. I am set up to accept cookies (on Firefox). Anyone else had this?
cruciverbophile
Fully clearing your browser’s cache/history and starting again usually resolves this issue.
Yes, that works on Chrome which has a “clean” cache and history. I’m reluctant to delete the entire history/cache on my default browser Firefox as that loses a lot of useful information and stored logins. It’s less hassle to fill the boxes again than log in to everything again, so I’ll leave it for the moment. Thanks for the prompt reply and tip anyway – at least I know what’s causing it now.
On a tablet I couldn’t easily find a list of categories. I was looking for a past Guardian Quiptic but couldn’t find a page with all the Quiptics together.
simonc @29
There is a dropdown list of categories in the righthand sidebar. On smaller screens this sidebar appears at the bottom of the page.
Since the new layout we seem to have lost some of our favourite bloggers, like Bert and Joyce.
Roger @31
We haven’t lost any bloggers (just their avatars). Bertandjoyce blogged last week (9/2) and will be doing so again on Friday (19/2).
Gaufrid,
If I do a site search for any of our setters, I get a list of all of their offerings (possibly with other occasions where their names were mentioned). This is as expected. But if I do a search for the bloggers, I get pretty much nothing. I understand not indexing the user comments, but don’t you think the bloggers might deserve being included? Just a thought. Thanks.
Dr. WhatsOn
On the Home page, scroll down to a post published by the blogger you are interested in. If you hover over the blogger’s name you will see that it becomes underlined, indicating a link. Click on the name and you will get a list of every post published by that blogger.
Gaufrid,
Great, that works. I now know the names are links, but maybe make them blue for the next unsuspecting user?
But what I really wanted to do was a compound search of blogger name and one of the clue words/answers. I really think you need to index the blogger names for that, no?
Thanks
Dr. WhatsOn
The colour of just one part of the post’s meta data is not something that I can easily change, unfortunately. I did try to do this when customising the new theme prior to it being installed on the live site but without success.
The easiest way to achieve what you want is to use Google Advanced Search ( https://www.google.com/advanced_search ). Put the blogger’s name and the clue words/answers in the ‘all these words’ box and http://www.fifteensquared.net in the ‘site or domain’ box then scroll down to the ‘Advance Search’ button.
Gaufrid,
Too bad about the colour.
Yes, I’ve gone the Google route but it’s much less user-friendly than the 225 site search, which is why I was hoping for one-stop-shopping. Oh well. Thanks for responding so quickly.
Me again. I’m trying to figure out more fully what the site search is/isn’t appropriate for. I just did a search for “this” and surprisingly the most recent hit returned was from 2017. I then entered “from this” and got tons of hits, the most recent from this month. So a more restrictive search got more hits. It looks like the former search missed a bunch of pages, or am I barking up the wrong tree here? Thanks again
Dr. WhatsOn
My apologies for the tardy reply. The search facility is an integral part of the software on which the site runs and I do not have any information as to how it is configured.
However, I have found that it works well when searching for a specific puzzle number or for puzzles set by a particular setter. It also seems to be able to find instances of an individual grid entry, or word in a clue, especially if it is somewhat recondite or esoteric.
What it doesn’t seem to do particularly well is handling multiple search terms which is probably best done using Google Advanced or similar.
Gaufrid,
Ok, np – I thought you had put it together yourself. I apologize for the grilling. You see, in a past life I built several search systems myself and was a bit of an authority, and the behaviour I was observing of the site search did not match any sensible configurations I could imagine.
The best explanation I can come up with is that the so-called “stop-words” (articles, prepositions, in general the approx 100 most frequent words in the language) which are often not even indexed are indexed here but are handled differently than other words; maybe a way that is appropriate for a corpus of hundreds of millions of words, but not for a small collection of cryptic crosswords where even an “a” or a “the” can have great significance. The search developers obviously didn’t anticipate this usage. I’ll stop now.
Gaufrid:
Occasionally (not very often) I would like to follow up a comment or exchange of comments in a way that would be of no interest to the general community, so an off-line correspondence would be more appropriate. Is there a way that I can connect by email with another commenter (obviously, only with their consent)? For instance, could you forward my email address to a commenter with a request that they contact me if they are willing to receive an email from me?
cellomaniac @41
This is something I have done very occasionally over the years and will continue to do so provided it remains infrequent. Just email me at the admin address with details of the topic and the person you would like to contact.
Gaufrid @30
On my Android tablet there is no right sidebar or drop-down list at the bottom of the page. Could a link to a list of categories be included in the menu?
Gaufrid @29
I’ve found the category selection box at the bottom of the page – I hadn’t realised you needed to scroll down for about ten minutes to get there. Could it be made a bit more easily accessible?
simonc
You don’t need to scroll down to the bottom of the page to select all posts in a particular category. On the Home page, just scroll down until the most recent puzzle in the required category is displayed then click on the category link immediately below the ‘Read more >>’ option.
It appears that the solution to FT 16,761 by Wanderer is MIA. Does that mean that I’m not the only one stuck on it? 🙂 I’m finding it unusually difficult. Good luck to whoever is blogging it!
Would it be hard to add puzzle date at top of blog when it’s a prize one. I get confused easily by the lag of a week.
Where is Everyman 3,891? I rely on you to explain the clues for me.
Charlie Owen @48
The Everyman blog is published on the Sunday after the puzzle appears in the paper so the one for 3,891 will be posted early tomorrow morning.
Hi Geoff,
Hope all is well.
Fifteensquared has got a mention in the Guardian today!:
https://www.theguardian.com/crosswords/crossword-blog/2021/jun/07/crossword-blog-meet-the-setter-carpathian-victoria-godfrey
Hi Gaufrid
No Quiptic blog today? There’s one I can’t parse 🙂
muffin @51
Thanks for the heads-up regarding the missing blog. I have now posted an analysis of the clues.
Thanks again Gaufrid.
Hi Gaufrid
There’s an occasional poster that I’ve seen on Guardian threads called “Couto” whose posts are always very negative and unconstructive. Today’s is typical:
“Dreadful, utterly dreadful.
The Guardian needs to give Paul a long leisure break (say until 2140).”
Can anything be done?
muffin @54
Not quite “always very negative …”. Of the 21 comments that Couto has posted since he first arrived in October 2019, just over half match your description. In fact six have been very complimentary. I think the best approach in cases like this is to follow HoofItYouDonkey’s advice @56 on yesterday’s blog and just ignore him.
OK Gaufrid, will do so
In the latest Phi crossword, I asked the question about how to do superscripts. From doing some research, I thought it was simply a matter of putting “sup” inside angled brackets, , then the superscript, then “/sup” inside angled brackets but this didn’t work and just produced a space. Is it platform dependent (I use an iPad)? Perhaps, it is possible to add this as an extra option to the Leave a comment box?
By the way, the two consecutive commas in my query above seem to be caused by the strange way angled brackets (greater than and less than signs) are interpreted presumably by hdmi.
Aargh! Got cables on my mind. Meant html not hdmi.
Hovis @57
The WordPress comment editor will only accept a few basic HTML tags and superscript is not one of them.
Hovis @57
Further to Gaufrid’s explanation, anything you put between angle brackets which is not one of the recognized html tags, together with the brackets themselves, simply does not appear. Hence the repeated commas in your post (containing unpublished angle brackets).
Thanks Gaufrid & Tony. That explains a lot. I remember posts in the past where superscripts appeared but, I guess, that was before fairly recent changes.
Hovis, there are ways of producing superscipt other than with html. I can get some using the keyboard on my phone and someone may be able to tell how to get them from a pc keyboard. Here’s one way:
https://unicode-table.com/en/sets/superscript-and-subscript-numbers/
Thanks again Tony. Wonder if 15² will work.
Apparently it does!
No Guardian blog today, Gaufrid?
Just a suggestion, Gaufrid, but have you considered getting rid of the preamble section of the blogs, or, alternatively, replacing them with statements such as “This crossword can be found at [link to online puzzle]”? I’m not sure what useful purpose they serve, and it is not unknown for bloggers to include spoilers, statements about how easy or difficult they found the puzzle, or comments on the quality of the puzzle (which, in my view, should not appear in the blog in any event, as they can be unfair and prejudicial).
Richard @67
I’m sure Gaufrid will give you a full answer in due course, but in brief, some bloggers do give a link to an online version of the puzzle. I think it would be a good thing if they all did this as standard, where appropriate (not all puzzles appear online).
I’m pretty sure bloggers are supposed to avoid spoilers, at least in that part of the preamble which will become the teaser in the list of posts. Best not to open the post if you haven’t done the puzzle yet, though?
RichardCV22 @67
Thanks for your suggestion. I think the site’s Home page would become very dull if all it contained was the puzzle title and a link to the puzzle itself. There is already a link to the Guardian, Independent and FT in the LH sidebar so there is little need to have another one in each individual post. Also, there have been a number of occasions when a favourable comment appearing on the Home page has caused someone to solve a puzzle that they otherwise wouldn’t have attempted.
The bloggers have every right to say how they found the puzzle, provided any criticism is valid and constructive. A number of setters have indicated that they value this feedback, which shouldn’t be limited to just the content of the subsequent comments.
For me, the hardest part of preparing a post is writing the preamble (well, most of the time anyway) so I would gladly forego having to do so. However, I don’t think this is something that should be removed globally, it is up to individual bloggers to decide how much, or how little, they wish to include in the preamble.
Thanks for the post on Independent 9539 which turned up in the “i” yesterday as no. 3265!
Given the Independent is no more, how about including the “i” cryptic crossword (unless they are all duplicated from the Independent) here?
Glyn @70
The Independent still exists, just online only. All the i puzzles are recycled Independent cryptics from around 4 years ago. There is a separate site – https://idothei.wordpress.com/ – which has a daily blog of the i with a link back to the original 15² post.
A technical question: why do most followed links on posts replace the fifteensquared tab, whereas some a least (as posted by bloggers?) open a new tab?
muffin @72
By default, HTML hyperlinks are displayed in the same browser window. The ‘link’ button above the comment box adds this basic HTML to the highlighted word(s) in the comment along with the link URL.
It is possible to add a ‘target’ to the the HTML so that the link is displayed in a new tab. The WordPress editor that bloggers use when preparing a post has the option to add just the basic default link or to add one that includes the new tab target.
Thanks Gaufrid
Would there be any way to standardize the file names per crossword? Or even have a second shortlink available that’s consistent? e.g. this week’s everyman is at https://www.fifteensquared.net/2021/08/01/everyman-3902-25-july/ and last weeks is at https://www.fifteensquared.net/2021/07/25/everyman-3901/. If every one was at a consistent link location (e.g. https://www.fifteensquared.net/guardian/everyman/3902) then it would be much easier to build tools that work with fifteensquared and the source puzzle!
Conor @75
It is possible to change the format of the URL for posts but it would have to apply globally and I’m not sure, without further investigation, that this would be appropriate for other puzzle series that we cover. Also, I would need to undertake extensive testing of any new format to ensure that all the various ways of accessing a puzzle continue to function correctly.
You have not given any indication as to what ‘tools’ you wish to build, nor the purpose for which they would be used, so I am unable to assess whether the time involved in a change could be justified.
Hello, and thanks for making and maintaining this site!
I’m really new to solving cryptic puzzles and find myself wanting to check through my reasoning when I have completed a clue as I go, while a particular word is still fresh in my mind. Sometimes I “spoiler” myself with the answers to adjacent clues, even when trying to cover the screen with my hand etc!
Could we please have a “hide answers” toggle or other way to avoid this? Something like the “spoiler tags” used on some forums would work, as would a drop-down of clue numbers to show only one answer at once.
I appreciate for experienced readers who solve the whole puzzle before looking this would get in the way, so a bit of JavaScript to turn this on once the page had loaded would be great for use newbies!
(At the risk of being unhelpfully-specific to one basic implementation, or telling you something you already know… in case it makes my request a bit clearer – one way to do what I’m asking would be to add a button on the blog/answer pages called “hide answers” that executes some JS that obscures the single word answers by making the background-color (SIC) property for (ie the span with the “fts-answer” class match the foreground “color”, and then returning the background to white on hover.)
Thanks 🙂
Is anyone else getting an occasional intrusion from Cloudflare when opening the Fifteensquared home page? The heading reads “Error 1016 Origin DNS error”. Refreshing the page a few times seems to clear it and it only happens when I haven’t visited Fifteensquared for a bit (e.g. overnight). I get it on both my PC and iPhone. It’s started just a few days ago.
cruciverbophile @78
I’ve not had any other reports of this problem. I have had a look at the relevant Cloudflare help page and it would appear, from my limited understanding, that the DNS error should be permanent rather than intermittent as you describe. I am not aware of any changes in recent days that might account for this issue.
If the problem persists please let me know via admin{at}fifteensquared{dot} net and I will investigate further. A screenshot of the error page would be useful along with details of your location, ISP etc.
Thanks Gaufrid, will let you know if it persists. It’s intermittent at the moment so probably hard to replicate, therefore not worth you spending time on it.
Hi all and many thanks for the site, which I only found last year, after starting to read the Grauniad comments (I can only afford one paper). Being self-taught means huge gaps in my understanding of clue types and their parsing, so this wonderful site has improved my solving no end. Brilliant!
MimiBwcyd if you want more than one newspaper your local library could possibly supply you with others (I’m assuming you live in the UK. Some of the daily cryptic crosswords are available on the internet.
I often do the Guardian cryptics a year or so late when they are published in our local Toronto paper. When stuck, and after giving each one a fair go, I will come to 225 to check. Today, for example, we have Boatman’s offering 28,032. My problem is that (a) the setter’s name isn’t printed but is necessary to know as it appears in some clues, and (b) there was evidently a preamble to this puzzle that was also not printed and imo would be vital to a successful solve. Couldn’t find it anywhere in fact, just know there was one from the comments section of the 225 post.
Is this part of the contractual obligations set by the Grauniad, or just less than due diligence on the part of the editor at this end?
MarkOnCan @83
Sorry but I’m unable to help with your query because I have no idea as to the terms agreed between the Guardian and other newspapers to which it syndicates.
The special instructions are on the Guardian’s own copy of the puzzle.
Thanks anyway, Gaufrid. I shall write to local paper (again), and see if they can do more than just say “sorry, and it won’t happen again” – until it does. I am so grateful for 225 – the explanations are always very clear – but am sure a lot of puzzlers over here don’t know about it and so must be totally bewildered when instructions are omitted.
I can’t see blog for guardian prize 28,560 yet and Saturday is well underway. Am I missing something?
CanberraGirl @86 and everyone else: I’m very sorry – I’m the blogger assigned to write the post for prize 28,560 but I’ve had a really frantic week and haven’t had time to write the post yet. I’ll post it tomorrow morning if not before. Many apologies for the delay.
Re Cruciverbophile’s problem @78, I have exactly the same issue and error message when trying to access from Kuala Lumpur. It sometimes takes 15 minutes of retrying to get the site to load. I just tried setting my VPN to UK/Docklands first and it loads immediately. So Cloudflare or some other component of the DNS resolution may be setting higher hurdles for non-UK access.
HKColin @88
Thanks for the feedback. I am aware of a similar problem in a couple of other countries and will be pursuing a resolution when my health permits.
FYI – This evening (UK time) I was unable to access the site. I checked on https://www.isitdownrightnow.com/ and it reported the site as down. After the site came back up, I’ve had occasional resolution errors.
I mention it because I was surprised nobody else had.
pdp11
Thanks for the info. There were some problems from late afternoon onwards because the hosting company was having network issues.
Does the lack of a blog for FT 16,951 mean that I’m not the only one struggling with it?
EdK@USA
Please see the comments in this post.
EdK@USA
Please ignore my previous reply. The blog has now been published and the Placeholder (to which the link led) deleted.
I asked how to insert accents in a comment. I was told to press on the letter and hold when options would appear. I can’t make it work. Help please
SM @95
The method depends on what you are using to access the site. If it is a pc with a standard keyboard that includes a numeric keypad then see here.
SM@95
That’s the way to get accented letters using android. At least that’s how it’s done on my android smartphone as I have it configured, with ‘Gboard multilingual typing’ selected under ‘Language and Input’ in ‘System’ settings.
Clearly, that can’t be what you’re using, but for anyone who is, I would clarify that when you hold your finger on a letter, a box with options, including accented versions of the letter where appropriate, comes up. You need to keep your finger on the keyboard and move it to highlight your choice within the box.
Voilà!
The access problems (at least from Australia) seem to be getting worse. Sometimes it takes 10 minutes of trying to get in. This morning (Saturday here) was bad. Sometimes it just fails but then sometimes there is a message with error 522. See link.
This is error message
https://www.dropbox.com/s/zy52r40mx8ob5f7/IMG_7425.PNG?dl=0
Same here from Czech Republic, though the error in my case is “Error 1016 Origin DNS error”. It went away for a few days and I was beginning to think it was sorted, but now it’s back with a vengeance. Happens with Firefox on Windows and Safari on iPhone.
Cloudflare is a real pain in the Arsenal!
I also have been having the Cloudflare problem on my Mac Air with Firefox – but not, it seems (I don’t use it so much for 15^2 so it may just be sampling lcuk), on my Android Motorola. I’m in Tasmania (in case my alias doesn’t give it away.
As has been mentioned on General Discussion, seemed to be a problem last night around 23:00. Instead of getting into the site, you got a download of an empty file.
No Everyman blog today ? Not complaining, I know how much effort the bloggers put in. Just asking in case it is simply a technical glitch.
Roz @102
Thanks for the heads-up. I hadn’t noticed omission. I have emailed the scheduled blogger and just hope that it is simply a case of forgetfulness.
Thank you Gaufrid, there is no rush, I was asking.
Hello there, have loved this site for a long time. Thanks to everyone who makes it what it is.
I notice that there is a weekly cryptic in The New Yorker. It’s on the easy side, and may be of interest to some solvers (e.g. the quiptic crowd, which includes me!). Would there be an interest in adding this to the list of covered papers?
Thanks.,
g
Gawain
Thanks for the suggestion. I have had a look at the Sunday cryptics in TNY and I don’t think there would be much interest on this site, even if I could find a blogger or bloggers. This is a UK site and I think we should keep to our core activity, ie UK puzzles. Also they are not 15×15 or 13×13 (for barred puzzles).
In today’s (16 Feb) Guardian blog, the first comment is from one “DT” and says “Let’s go Brandon”. It may have slipped past because today’s setter was Br_e_ndan, or you may not be aware, but this is a phrase used by the right wing here in the US to mean “F*** you Biden”. (You can Google its origin if you like.) Please remove it, as it goes against the site policy of no inflammatory or derogatory language, however disguised. Thanks.
Eleanor @107
Many thanks for the heads-up. I was not aware of the US phrase when I first read the comment early this morning. I have now edited out the content of the comment but have kept the comment in place so as to not affect later comments that refer to specific comment numbers.
@Eleanor
You’re such a party pooper. Relax, have yourself a long island iced tea.
I apologise for my comment. I thought I was being funny but there is no place for that type of behaviour on this forum.
I noticed DT’s comment and, of course, know the source. It did not bother me at all, but I recognize that it could bother some, and consequently support its removal. In my days as a crossword editor, I was very careful to try to avoid anything that might give offence, however questionably — and often failed. I still reckon it is best to err on the safe side.
DT @110
Apology accepted.
I am getting this message on a regular basis when refreshing pages on the site:
Error 1016 Ray ID: 6df8e2488f5b60e0 • 2022-02-18 17:13:13 UTC
Origin DNS error
Alphalpha @113
Sorry to hear that you are experiencing problems when accessing the site. This Error 1016 issue was first brought to my attention about six months ago and it has now occurred in at least seven countries around the world. I have spent many hours trying to determine how/why the error message is being generated/displayed. I have used online tools on a number of occasions (including shortly after you posted your comment) to check and test the site’s DNS records and no errors have been detected. A member of the blogging team who is very IT literate has also looked at the DNS records and could find nothing amiss.
Unfortunately, some time ago Cloudflare withdrew its support for those using the free version, relying instead on a user forum to resolve issues. I have been unable to find anything relevant in that forum, nor in the Cloudflare help pages. It is very difficult to track down the cause of something that is intermittent, and that cannot be readily replicated, but I will continue trying to do so.
Gaufrid@114: That was purely FYI (and fwiw). As you say it’s intermittent (and non-fatal – it goes away after a while). If I can spot any pattern I’ll let you know.
The comment made by Chardonnay on yesterday’s FT puzzle seems to me to be way out of order, but it has not been removed. Is this sort of thing permitted on this site?
Now John Lewis are dropping their Never Knowingly Undersold by line will fifteensq change too? 🙂
flashling @117
Can you suggest a better one? If so I will adopt it.
thanks gaufrid for the comment @114 – I too can attest to experiencing this intermittent access error from Cloudfare. At least I know I’m not alone — safety in numbers?
Gaufrid,
“Where good clues obsess”?
