Isn’t 16 a quadruple definition? To hand is to give (she handed me the book).
Thanks Klingsor and NealH.
I too thought 16A is quadruple. Didn’t understand 18D (despite having euphorbia in my garden) as I haven’t previously seen B = barrels. Very nice, so thanks Klingsor and Neal.
A rare treat – Klingsor on a Monday.
I had ticks for REPELLENT, MILLENNIUM, MERCHANT, INCENSE and the quadruple HAND.
Thanks to Klingsor for an enjoyable puzzle and to NealH for the blog.
Most enjoyable and a great start to the week. I particularly liked 4a and 11a not to mention the quadruple 16a. Like Tatrasman, I have not seen B meaning “barrels” before.
Thank you, Klingsor for the entertainment and many thanks to NealH for the blog.
I’ve come to accept any words first letter is up for grabs in crossword land? .. didn’t help me as I’ve never heard of the plant!!.. of course it might be that in ancient publicans logs B might indicate a barrel?… the rest was excellent stuff.. a very pleasant Monday so far…
thanks Klingsor n NealH
I had come across b for barrels – it’s in Chambers – but I didn’t know the plant, either.
Immaculately clued as always from Klingsor and a delight for a Monday. HAND was our loi and I struggled to get 2 definitions let alone 4! Many thanks to K and NealH.
I meant to add that I thought b was an abbreviation for barrels of oil, but I can’t find it online
@dormouse I do know the plant, my wife has recently planted some in our back garden. As for b as barrels, I’ve seen it so often over the years I didn’t give it a second thought.
Very gentle for a klingsor, might explain the rare Monday slot. Thanks to setter and NH for the bloggage.
Strange to think that the same plant contains euphoria in one name and purge in another (spurge).
Although one of us is a performer in a small way we have to confess to not knowing RITENUTO and having to confirm it in the Oxford Dictionary of Music – but it was easily got from the wordplay. It’s the musical equivalent of stepping on the brake rather than just taking your foot off the accelerator.
A very enjoyable start to the week although there were one or two we couldn’t parse properly.
Thanks, Klingsor and NealH.
As an avid fan of Terry Pratchett, I was struck by seeing Millennium, Hand, and Shrimp so prominently placed. RIP Terry.
There’s BUGRIT in row 5 too Caretman, but I can’t see any sign of Foul Ole Ron himself.
