Thanks Carpathian and scchua
Very nice. I didn’t parse all of TERROR STRICKEN. Favourites SEQUINED and ZERO.
Should the “with” in 6d be part of the def?
Tough enough to be interesting: it took me a while to sort out EXPLETIVES and TERROR-STRICKEN. Liked BIN LINER and JOVIAL, and CHRONIC for a nice surface. It’s a pangram, too.
Worth it for FORTUNE TELLERS and the amusing SPECTACULAR. Very nice Q.
Ta Carpathian & scchua
A fine Quiptic. Nice to see ROSE instead of red or Asti, and X as a clue for TEN rather than the other way round. TERROR-STRICKEN, DISCONNECT and JOVIAL were my favourites.
Lovely crossword, and finished within an hour which is mighty fast for me. In the blog, I think you can add 1d to the list of one word definitions; must = “essential” with “element of returned …” being the wordplay ?
Thanks to Carpathian & scchua
Enjoyed this.
Favourites shared with those above include JOVIAL (as soon as I saw *little woman* I started trying to remember their names) SEQUINED, DISCONNECT and also RUINOUS.
Didn’t spot X = TEN annoyingly.
Thanks to Carpathian and scchua
This was annoying me at first, but it just turned out to be my dimness. As pennies started to drop, I found some very nice clues: SEQUINED, TERROR STRICKEN, BIN LINER, JOVIAL, EQUALS, VIEWING amongst others. The anagram fodder for FORTUNE TELLERS was a little too close to the answer for my liking. Overall, though, perhaps a tad on the harder side for a Quiptic? Thanks, Carpathian and scchua.
Took me about double the time of today’s cryptic! All good fun. I thought the ‘JO’ for JOLLY / JOVIAL made it a bit easy. 1A went straight in, and 13A was LOI – I had DISCO but the rest wouldn’t drop for a while.
Rather liked 19D for being completely non-homophonous.
Very enjoyable puzzle which I managed to solve in possibly record time (for me).
My favourites: RUINOUS, SEQUINED, TERROR-STRICKEN, EXPLETIVES.
Thanks, both.
Very good Quiptic with nice variety of clues.
I liked the anagram spots in FORTUNE-TELLERS and TERROR-STRICKEN. RUINOUS had another tick.
Thanks Carpathian and scchua.
btw scchua, you have the wrong underline for JOVIAL
Lovely anagrams today -particularly FORTUNE TELLERS.
Thanks Carpathian and scchua.
Thanks Carpathian and scchua. I thought this was superb, exemplary in all respects. Agree with gif @2 that ‘with’ needs to be included as part of the definition, not least by way of crediting Carpathian for precision in clueing – no redundant link words or loose definitions here today!
Overall difficulty about the same as the Cryptic for me, but the difference is that everything here is entirely “fair”, and by the book – which is what makes this, IMO, a good exercise for less experienced solvers (compared to Vulcan’s more libertarian approach). I think this fits with Anto’s recently expressed view on what the purpose of the Quiptic should be.
Also love the general succinctness of the clues, and the (mostly) smooth surfaces, but didn’t pick up specifically on the conciseness of the definitions – well spotted, scchua. And as per gladys @3, it was all the more satisfying for being a pangram – got about halfway through before realising I was only missing J and W… so was even happier when JOVIAL and VIEWING fell into place shortly after.
Thanks muffin@12. Consider the blog corrected, as my laptop has died and I’m unsure about editing it on my mobile.
grantinfreo@2, I had considered what you suggested but I settled for “corresponds with = corresponds to = equals to”. It’s 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.
For once I spotted the pangram. I must be getting better. Now I just need to spot the themes, when they’re there! Thanks, Carpathian, for an enjoyable work-out.
I particularly enjoyed this one, thanks Vigo and sschua!
Thanks very much Carpathian and scchua for the excellent crossword and blog. I found the Quiptic quite hard but very enjoyable and also fair!
Thanks for this -useful parsing, as always. However, I would like to register my sincere dislike of the picture of a woman used to illustrate “sequined”. This appears to be pure objectification and is unrelated to the clue; I also do not like its juxtaposition with a horse. Let’s get away from this kind of rubbish, please.
