S&B York 2022 – Friday 28th & Saturday 29th October 2022
On behalf of John Henderson
Hello, everybody.
Here’s the usual preliminary announcement to inform you that, barring pandemics and further unforeseen circumstances, York Sloggers & Betters will be going ahead as usual. As ever, it’s in the diary for “Clock Weekend”, allowing everyone an extra hour to recover from Saturday exertions on Sunday morning.
We will be following last year’s timetable, keeping everything in the same vicinity. Quiz Night will be on Friday October 28th, 6-9pm in the Cross Keys (junction of Tadcaster Road and St Helen’s Road); Puzzle Day will be on Saturday October 29th, from opening time (TBC) in the Fox and Roman (a little further along Tadcaster Road). The venues will provide, respectively, a sandwich/chips supper on Friday (£3pp) and a hot lunch with vegan option on Saturday (£12). So that I can get an approximate idea of numbers, I’d be grateful if you would indicate below whether you are likely to attend and, if so, whether you would like to partake of the above options (the normal pub menus will also be available, but there may be a longer than average wait). Please indicate, as follows:
A – your name(s) with pseudonyms as appropriate, these are useful for name badges;
B – attending on Friday? Y/N
C – (if Yes to B) – food, please? Y/N
D – attending on Saturday? Y/N
E – (if Yes to D) – food, please? Y/N
Note that, at present, this is about the likelihood that you will attend, it does not commit you to attending. There will be a further announcement to this end at the start of October.
For those wishing to stay at Stableside (Stableside at York Racecourse, Tadcaster Road, York YO24 1QG), I have as usual reserved a block of en suite rooms in the main block. The cost is the same as last year, although breakfast is now included in the price, not paid for separately: £65 per single room and £110 per double room per night. Stableside is right opposite the Fox and Roman. If you wish to book here, please contact Fay Waudby-Green directly at the venue (phone: 01904 709174 or email: fay.waudby@yorkracecourse.co.uk), quoting S&B2022. A £10 deposit will be required to secure your booking. Alternative local hotels are Holiday Inn and Marriott, but they carry a price warning!
Despite the name, the event is not just restricted to crossword compilers and bloggers; indeed, anyone with an interest in words, puzzles, trivia etc will be made most welcome, with or without partners.
Looking forward to seeing you all.

I’d like to come if I can persuade others. I’ve only been once before when it was in Cambridge, and there were no puzzles or quizzes. Are these team events or individual (erk!)?

Caroline @38, the Friday quiz is in teams, but John is normally very good at ensuring nobody gets left out, and most of us don’t have teams organised in advance.
Pleased to report that Advance tickets from Cambridge are now available so for the princely sum of £42 (student railcard useful!) I’ll be arriving in time for lunch, leaving about half six, on the Saturday. Looking forward to seeing people. Hamish/Soup (ANNYY, if anyone is still counting.)
