Independent 11,205 by Crosophile

The puzzle is available here.

Hello everyone, it’s been a while.  Many thanks to the lovely Flashling for standing in for me expertly while I was away.

For today’s entertainment it’s thanks to Crosophile.  Themophiles are sure to love this, and as I like a theme myself when done well I enjoyed detecting this one.  I found the puzzle pretty tricky but a pleasure to solve.

At first I was focussing on 12a as the centrepiece of the theme, taken in by the red herrings GUMSHOE AND STITCH, but then I did some more READING of the grid.  We have many literary elements, from a single LETTER right through to a whole LIBRARY:

LETTER, WORD, PHRASE, SENTENCE, PAGE, CHAPTER, RHYME, ESSAY, GOSPEL, BOOK, LIBRARY

Did I miss any?

Definitions are underlined in the clues below.  In the explanations, quoted indicators are in italics, explicit [deletions] are in square brackets, and I’ve capitalised and emboldened letters which appear in the ANSWER.  For clarity, I omit most link words and some juxtaposition indicators.

Across

8a    Dick sticks with garden implement (7)
GUMSHOE
GUMS (sticks) + HOE (garden implement).  The definition and answer are both informal terms for a detective

  1. Well spotted Kitty! I was in too much of a hurry this morning to look for a theme. The only other (tenuous) link could be PEN in SHARPENED, but probably coincidental. Thanks to setter and blogger.

  2. Lovely?? Actually it was for the Sunday one. Missed the link despite knowing that Crosophile does themed crosswords. Ho hum. Thanks for the blog and CP for the workout.

  3. Based on the available evidence, Flashling, yes, lovely. Like a good scientist, additional evidence could cause me to reconsider my assessment. 😉

Yes, my last Indy blog would have been for the Sunday puzzle four weeks ago. (I know because I will be back here again tomorrow, you lucky ducks!) I had meant to drop in at the time but found myself far too occupied with other things for crosswords. Imagine!

  4. Thanks Kitty and Crosophile.
Great puzzle. Needed parsing for 15d, forgot teepee is tent. Yes, saw the theme.
ESSAYERS, THANK YOU, CHAPTER are favs though no idea who the group of angels are.

  5. Belated Thanks, Kitty, for the blog, and thanks for the comments.
Belated because I was on a Cornish campsite without internet. :-/
