Liked CYBERCAFE, DISPLACE and HOTEL.
Thanks, Silvanus for this enjoyable (should I say ‘light’?) puzzle.
Thanks, scchua for the neat blog.
Found the SW a bit tricky but got there in the end. Had to check LAG could refer to a “former prisoner” as well as a current one.
Not sure I was thinking ‘light’ about two thirds of the way through when I ground to a halt but the second cuppa reinvigorated and LIECHTENSTEIN suddenly swam out of the jumble of letters I was attempting to resolve in my head. Then everything else closed down satisfactorily with CYBERCAFE LOI (and how often do I go through the vowels – CAB, CEB, CIB, COB, CUB … – and then belatedly remember to check Y. Doh!)
I enjoyed all the anagrams – although assembling the fodder for APHRODISIAC was challenging – and one of them, DISAPPOINTING, is my COTD for the seamless way the anagrind, anagram and then inconsequential word for bricklaying all fit together. Delightful. Although a lot less tricky, FLESHY and ABDUCTOR were two other favourites along with the cheeky PREVAIL. I was initially racking my brains to recall early detail from The Sound of Music in case that would be helpful.
Thanks Silvanus and scchua
And I thought 21 was the cable guy from Seinfeld.
Thanks, Silvanus & scchua. A nice gentle Sunday morning solve but by no means a walkover. Everything as neat and precise as you’d expect from this setter with a nice sprinkling of clever misdirection and wit to make things interesting.
What Widdersbel said!
One of those lovely Sundays that starts with “I can’t seem to find anything” to gradually getting everything. Thx to Silvanus and scchua!
I always enjoy this setter’s (happily not infrequent) appearances elsewhere and I thoroughly enjoyed this top-notch offering.
My page is littered with ticks but I’ll mention STARSHIP, DEFILE, CABLE and PREVAIL but my favourite was the excellent DISAPPOINTING (two words that don’t sit easily together!)
Many thanks indeed to Silvanus and scchua.
In grammar, gender is masculine, “feminine” or neuter. “Female” is the term used in the biological distinction of sex. It would have been nice if 15d had been massaged to avoid this common usage error.
Always enjoy this setter’s work wherever he appears and this was no exception. I had broad smiles for PREVAIL & HEYDAY and my top three were DISAPPOINTING, CABLE & TERRAPIN.
Many thanks to Silvanus for the fun solve and to scchua for the review.
Thanks both. Like others here, this fell in place eventually after some self-doubt. Including hesitation over LIFE BELTS perhaps as I have always regarded my life and career as mutually exclusive
I know what you mean, TFO. Indeed, I feel like my life really began when I retired.
What Widdersbel and Tatrasman said.
Compiler here, many thanks to scchua and to everyone who has taken the trouble to leave comments.
