Thanks, Filbert and scchua!
An enjoyable Sunday puzzle and a lovely (crystal-clear) blog.
Loved DISH (yummy).
Liked TWIG, STEEPLECHASE (excellent cryptic def) and IMPOSTER (might have seen the device Post ER before).
Dunno how many might find the def for PERPENDICULAR normal. 🙂
TWIG:
Not sure you have indicated ‘Get it?’ as the second def. If I am repeating what you said, please ignore this comment.
Thanks KVa. I was distracted by seeing “Get it?” as part of the wordplay – indicating that the first defn. is the answer to a riddle. Blog amended accordingly.
Apparently normal from the Latin normalis, which means ‘made according to a carpenter’s square, forming a right angle’ so perpendicular. Much to learn and enjoy as always. NHO or only vaguely aware of were DOSS (sleep for me), REPRO, and DIGERATI (like) which expand my lexicon and The Princess who I thought might be kept awake at night by a homphone for PEA until I had HEARTACHE for the crossers. Thanks to scchua (great blog) and Filbert.
Thanks, Filbert and scchua.
Loved it.
SHORT CUT
DISH
PIED-A-TERRE
HEARTACHE
PERPENDICULAR
IMPOSTER make my list.
Another fab puzzle from Filbert; I am impressed at the pace with which they are arriving. Lots of variety as usual with faves including TWIG (even if it is a bit of a chestnut), STEEPLECHASER (even if it is a chestnut, full stop), PARKING FINE, DISH, RAISE CAIN and PERPENDICULAR (Duel was a strange movie – surprisingly gripping for such a one dimensional plot – which Filbert has managed to precis perfectly in his clue.
Thanks Filbert and scchua
In PIED-A-TERRE “Where” is the only word not involved in the wordplay, so that has to be the definition, doesn’t it? Or is it an &lit?
Wiktionary translates PIED-A-TERRE from French as … PIED-A-TERRE – very helpful.
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/pied-%C3%A0-terre#French
Took ages to TWIG DIGERATI (again) – needed the D to get DROSS – needed the S to get STEEPLECHASER – needed the H to get loi DISH
Enjoyably tricky and fun.
Thanks F&s
Superb, as usual. TWIG made me laugh out loud. Thanks, Filbert and scchua
By the way, a pink is a flower, a type of carnation, and I expect this is the definition Filbert had in mind.
FrankieG@6
You are right. Almost an &lit. However, the whole clue could be underlined as the def, I think.
Widdersbel@7
Thanks for highlighting the CARNATION-pink-flower connection. This link makes the clue much
more interesting.
Widders @27: I had missed the definition in the blog and completely agree with you. A pink is a carnation and surely the intended def.
To be fair, it works either way. Just been looking it up in the OED… The etymology of both words is fascinating, and a lot more complex than I would have imagined.
The online version highlighted 9a as an opener and the answer was obviously ‘din’ (from ‘ding’) so I confidently revealed PEA and, aark, a dnf (dns?). After that I just moused around, eventually revealing those that eluded initial cryptanalysis. Enjoyed it immensely, with PIED-A-TERRE raising a significant snurkle but only after sschua parsed it for me – great clue (and an &lit no?).
Thanks both.
Thanks both. Also enjoyed the variety which presented a stern challenge. CHINOS are ‘pants’ to many folk in Northern England, so I was unsure about the association with Biden. IN OFF is an unwanted speciality of mine on my pool table, but it is a valid scoring shot in billiards
Thanks Filbert for another super crossword. There were many clues I liked including SHORT CUT, CARNATION (loved the efficiency), and DIGERATI. Thanks scchua for parsing the very clever PIED-A-TERRE and Sofamore @3 for explaining how PERPENDICULAR is “normal.”
