Azed 2677

We have a solid standard puzzle from Azed this week.

This was a plain Azed puzzle with normal clues although there was a note that stated: “34 appears only, with several other words, at a separate entry whose headword is an anagram of AN ANADEM”  The detailed parsing below confirms that the entry NASORAEANS is found under the headword MANDAEAN in ChambersYou will see though that I am not entirely sure which words form the definition in the clue.

I made reasonable progress with this puzzle and got quite a long way in before resorting to the dictionary. As usual there were some new words for me among the entries and the wordplay.  I also learned about the Great Bed of Ware, see HERE

  1. I think “name as part of” has to be part of the definition as I can’t see how it can be part of the wordplay, but I must admit I did give a bit of a shrug at the definition.

  2. Thanks for the blog, I did not worry too much about NASORAEANS once I had got it, the wordplay works fine.
For MORUS I had US as unserviceable but does not really matter , Azed use this quite a lot, along with PROA which has several spellings. Could not find NOOB in my Chambers93 but had to be right.

  3. From what I’ve read Roz @2, the word NOOB originated circa 2000 so it’s not surprising that C93 doesn’t have it. It’s in C2016.

  4. Thanks for the blog, there were several I needed to check. For some reason found this trickier than usual. I was surprised Azed gave quite so much information for 34a. I only had to put AN ANADEM into the Chambers app to immediately be offered MANDAEAN as the only word possible.
Still not sure why it’s necessary to specific “meat” in 24d.
Didn’t know the bed reference and I’ve made a note of U/S for future reference.
    Thanks to A & D.

  5. Thanks Azed and Duncan

19ac: I knew this because the Great Bed of Ware is mentioned in Twelfth Night, which was one of my set texts for English Literature O level. I think “finely wrought” needs to be part of the second definition.

34ac: In response to Jay@7, it appears that Azed’s mind still works in terms of those who use the printed dictionary (of whom I happen to be one).

Small point on 2dn: The answer needs the hyphen in air-sea rescue (as given in Chambers) to match the enumeration as two words, not three. We have discussed Azed’s policy of not indicating hyphens on previous occasions.

  6. I agree with Tim@1 about 34ac – I can’t see how ‘name’ or ‘name as part of’ fits into the wordplay. Also, from what I’ve read online (admittedly not always accurate!), Mandaeans aren’t Jewish; they claim their religion predates Judaism.
Jay@7, I agree a pastry doesn’t necessarily contain meat, but I think the definition of pie is something in pastry ie ‘pastry’ alone would not be a definition of pie. ‘Filled pastries’ would probably have worked, but I guess ‘meat’ is as good as anything (despite my being veggie!).

  7. MM@9, thank you for the pie insight, that makes sense now. Chambers defines pastry as “the crust of pies”, not the pies themselves.

  8. Too busy to post on Sunday so I suppose no-one will read this. Enjoyed the puzzle though only just managed to complete it on the day. Thanks to Azed and to duncanshiell for the blog.
NASORAEANS was easy enough to enter but Azed’s comment meant one had to follow up by deducing MAND…. and finding the entry. One assumes that any modern-day members of such a sect will be the subject of persecution by other majorities. “Plus ça change”
