Filbert is occupying the first Tuesday slot of 2024, with a puzzle that has provided me with a lot to get my teeth into.
Tuesday is theme day, and many of the clues and the odd solution are ingeniously peppered with references to James Bond and espionage. Interestingly, the NE quadrant of the completed grid contains Vesper (Lynd), a character played by actress Eva Green in the 2006 Bond film Casino Royale.
I chipped away at this puzzle, making only steady progress and needing a lot of time to tease out the rather intricate wordplay of some clues, such as 12, 18D, 24 and especially the short but tricky-to-parse entry at 23.
My favourite clues today were 14, 15 and 19, for the various 007 references, but this is definitely one of those puzzles where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
Overall, if today’s puzzle is anything to go by, 2024 could prove to be a cruciverbally challenging but highly entertaining year!

And I thought the theme was gambling and card games. Excellent puzzle as always. Tops for me were ELLIPSIS, OMEGA, BARONESS and Q’s successors. Very droll use of theme. Thanks heaps.
Sofamore @1: if you did think that, you have plenty of excuse. I think the theme is particularly focused on the 2006 remake of Casino Royale which, of course, was based largely on a card game. Poker, Montenegro, the Vesper Lynd character holding the additional funding, the brutal interrogation of Bond (twice referenced), the death in Venice (in a lift cage) are all key elements. And there is no obvious reference to any other Bond movie.
Not an easy puzzle but very satisfying to complete and a theme even I could not miss.
Thanks Filbert and RR
*(EVA IN THE)+N(ame) in DICE
Some very cleverly themed clues in this one.
12 down is an incredible piece of wordplay given everything involved.
I particularly liked the not Big Brother clue at 24d.
Even with the obvious theme I still initially read 19a as a reference to the OOM guitar body shape, especially as it had frets.
I personally got through this a lot quicker than I do normally with Filbert’s at just over half an hour. I often don’t finish them at all. However there were a few unparsed so thanks to RR for filling in those for me.
And thanks to Filbert for the excellent puzzle.
Superb puzzle, lots of fun – I agree with RR about it being greater than the sum of its parts (though its parts are all individually fine) and with PM about the theme being specifically Casino Royale.
Thanks, Filbert and RR.
Superb puzzle by one of the very best setters around.
Thanks Filbert and RatkojaRiku.
UNEMOTIONAL is simply brilliant in the context of the theme!
Despite never having seen Casino Royale, I really enjoyed this. MURDER is a simple reverse rather than an anagram. My favourites among a lot of stiff competing were ELLIPSIS, ADHERERS and UNEMOTIONAL.
Excellent one, this – enjoyed it all the way through. I’ve not seen that version of Casino Royale so did not know about Eva, but all the clues were gettable. Thank you RR for showing some of the extra nuances – 23d is indeed remarkable, and working in ‘shaken, not stirred’ was inspired.
Happy New Year, & thanks for the nice blog and comments, much appreciated.
I watched this youtube video while writing the puzzle; it shows the making of the collapsing palazzo scenes. It looked pretty hairy. They called it Death in Venice too.
