  1. KVa

    Liked TANGO, IDIOT and NECTAR.
    DIATRIBE
    A minor point:
    put away=ATE

    Thanks Tees and scchua!

  2. scchua

    Thanks, KVa. Blog corrected.

  3. FrankieG

WALTER WINTERBOTTOM presided over Hungary 7–1 England (1954)
‘The match has remained England’s largest defeat to this day.’ – and a 70th (Platinum) anniversary.

  4. PostMark

I had not heard of the manager but was able to assemble the answer. However, having not heard, there was no reason for the def not to be ‘Manager charged’ – and the ‘with’ = W, change = ALTER etc which led me up a parsing garden path for a while. Also nho ACADIA but it had to be that – where those provinces lay was a mystery to me.

Faves in and enjoyable puzzle were TANGO, LACONIC, CATAMARAN, BOATSWAIN, COCKTAIL and NECTAR. Not sure I go a bundle on the alternation indication for ETNA.

    Thanks Tees and scchua

  5. crypticsue

Thanks to Tees for yet another enjoyable Sunday crossword. As a lover of words, I have always thought the football manager had a particularly splendid name and,. unlike Mr CS, I did remember him

    Thanks also to scchua

  6. Petert

I was able to deduce Acadia from Accadian, a term for French speakers of Eastern Canada, from which we get the term Cajun. A very enjoyable puzzle and blog. Thanks, both.

  7. Alliacol

Reliably precise and greatly enjoyable. I hadn’t heard of the manager but it was one of those great clues in which the GK was not absolutely necessary. Thanks both.

  8. Matthew Newell

Lovely teatime crossword. Thanks Setter and Blogger.

  9. Emlumined

14 immediately brought to mind David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest.

    Thanks both.

  10. Tony Santucci

Thanks Tees for the Sunday entertainment. I failed with the football manager but most else made sense to me. My top picks were the well-built TORSO, ESTER, ONANISM, LACONIC, COCKTAIL, and DIATRIBE. Thanks scchua for the blog.

  11. Tees
