It’s a Saturday and the puzzle is set by Phi !
Has there been a day shift in crossword land? Well we won’t get Groundhog day again or will we?
No theme as far as I can see but there may be one hidden from my view.
Favourite clues 12dn for how it conveyed to me that a pilgrimage is a depressing journey, 2dn was a very neat surface and 1ac. 25ac was the last one I parsed.
Thanks Phi and no doubt you will return to Friday next week

Top faves:
MATHEMATICS, PILGRIMAGE and AVAILS.
MATHEMATICS
of blood=HaEMATIC (I think the inclusion of ‘study’ in the wordplay
by twencelas seems unintentional).
I liked ACROBATICS, PILGRIMAGE and RICOCHET. Thanks, both.
Enjoyed this a lot with only CIVILIAN causing me some difficulty as I just didn’t equate solution with the def and thought ‘will have’ was doing more than acting as a link. Oh, and nho ORT as a dialect word for an uneaten morsel so TROJAN went in with a shrug.
CHARLATAN, RICOCHET, DISSIDENT, CANDELABRA, ACROBATICS, LISLE, PILGRIMAGE and HEADLAND earned my ticks.
EMBLEMATICAL is an odd word; one wonders just what the difference is between that and ’emblematic’.
Thanks Phi and twencelas
With so few comments, thought Iād clock in to say thanks to Slogger and Better. – Your good efforts are appreciated. Thank you both
PS. NHO ORT, LASSI, KARST enjoyed CANDELABRA
Curious. I thought ORT was well known and often appeared in crosswords.
ORT was new to me but I’ll try to remember it. 1ac was my LOI because I kept thinking it must be Charleston which of course (a) won’t fit unless you spell it incorrectly and (b) doesn’t parse. Thanks to Phi and twencelas!
Finished this morning after not starting it until bed time last night. Romped through the first half before giving into sleep, then finished it over leisurely coffee this morning.
Couldn’t parse mathematics or avails, so thanks to twenceslas for clarification.
Several neat misdirections in the likes of Beagle (well they fooled me at first!).
Had not heard of ort, karst or a slow neutron, but all was fine to work out. I rather liked the candelabra and vaudevillian anagrams.
Thanks Phi.
I add to then nho ort team.
Sorry, nearly forgot: there is a theme: try a verse from this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-3POtTNrJI
“And there were looks for sale,
the art of the smile ā
(only certain people walked that mystery mile;
artists, charlatans, vaudevillians,
men of mathematics, acrobatics, and civilians”
William Bolcom / Arnold Weinstein
Cabaret Songs
Very smooth sailing though I did hit a few rocks. AVAILS, MATHEMATICS, and CIVILIAN were found but not parsed, but I had many clues that gave me full satisfaction once the pennies dropped – Phi, your clues are assembled with great care. Terrific anagrams.
Needless to say I had no inkling of the theme: it went so far over my head it might as well have been a non-rigid airship!
Thank you twencelas: you are indeed a good king.
