Cyclops is on tip-top form this fortnight, with some great surface reads and relatively topical material (given the constraints of setting lead times and a fortnightly publication, and a little Truss-ian serendipity)…
We have the egotistic gargoyle-like ‘political maverick’ GEORGE GALLOWAY at 17A/29A; the late Alexei Navalny, poignantly, as the DISSIDENT at 6D; and the MEALY-MOUTHED RIGHT-WING JESTER Liz Truss, flogging her book and choosing her prison block at 10A.
19A isn’t particularly current, but it is a harsh assessment of Kamala Harris – who must have been the most anonymous of VeePees in recent years, but will surely be an even shorter heartbeat away from power if the Biden-Harris ticket wins again, bidin’ her time, with good-ol’ Joe powering (or tripping) on into his mid-80s…
Away from politics, the HOSPITAL anagram at 15A with HOT LIPS from M*A*S*H was probably the pick of the bunch; and the LOBSTER as a ‘victim of pot’ at 22D raised a chuckle!
A smattering of smuttery elsewhere, and all is as it should be in the Cyclops-ean universe…
My thanks to him, as always, and I trust all is clear below…

Enjoyable, came fairly quickly. 1D, 15A and 14D favourites. Thanks mc_rapper67 and Cyclops.
TIGHT
I think the second part of the clue refers to lashing out/being extravagant.
Thanks mc and Cyclops!
Thanks for the blog, very enjoyable puzzle even though it has a somewhat harsher tone at times. Brilliant clue for GEORGE GALLOWAY. I do not know enough about it to comment on Kamala Harris, the VP is meant to be in the background so that the President gets all the limelight but they then get accused of doing nothing.
Agree with KVa@2 for TIGHT , lash out the opposite of being mean , although I would say splash out.
Another DNF for me, defeated by WINDBAG/DETAINEE after persuading myself that LEGEND was good enough for the Ambassador (e.g. Pele might be said to be a legend/ambassador for sport, with end=put away). The cd for DETAINEE doesn’t really click for me but that may just be sour grapes 🙂
6D re Navalny was my CoW, but also enjoyed the Pot Victim and the Crafty Thing.
Thanks mc & cyclops!
Another enjoyable romp around the grid all up until the last two.
Saaam above, I can understand getting frustrated by the crossing pair 9 & 13. There was no way I could get DETAINEE until I got that starting letter D. And getting 9D even with 2 crossing letters was tricky. It me some time to see the Turn = WIND device. I’m sure Cyclops has used that in the past.
Thanks MC & our one-eyed friend
I, too, blew out on WINDBAG and DETAINEE. I had OUTSIDER for the latter which, of course, bust the other.
Thanks to all!!
Saaam i don’t think it’s sour grapes, that was my last in even with all crossers, and i was more relieved than anything. But apart from that I thought there were some absolute belters here, all noted above, but a mention for the short and bittersweet SHAG! KVa if you are right that one can lash out rather than splash out on say a round for the house then thanks for making more sense of that one.
PS also thanks of course to you mc_rapper, sorry!
Thanks mc_rapper67 and Cyclops. I agree with Kva@1 and Roz@2 re 25d.
I also took 14d to be a double definition but with the idea that having received treatment/indoctrination by the opposition party you could become LABOURED I.e. 2nd definition results in BE LABOURED.
I remember struggling to parse 25a for ages before seeing TOO =UNDULY.
I really enjoyed crossword and blog and had also marked 22d as a fave.
Thanks for all the comments – a veritable hive of activity yesterday, compared to the usual Cyclops cadence! Much appreciated as usual. (I was out all day, taking Thing 1 back up to uni, but was monitoring updates.)
Apart from some minor consternation over the CD at 13A, the only other point of note seems to be my parsing of TIGHT at 25D. I’d only ever used/heard of LASH OUT as indicating violence, but as several have pointed out, and my eChambers and eCollins confirm, it can mean to spend extravagantly, so be the opposite of ‘tight’/miserly. (Collins has it as ‘British informal‘.) Will update accordingly.
Gazzh at #7 – what an evocative phrase – ‘…the short and bittersweet shag‘! I presume you aren’t referring to a variety of the seabird (;+>)
