FT 17,726 by Pedrock

Puzzle from the Weekend FT of May 4, 2024

I coasted through this one and especially enjoyed 2 (FAST-BREEDER), 15 (HERMIT CRAB) and 18 (IN AND OUT).  I am unable to fully explain 1a (SAFETY) and 11 (WITHOUT), and think there must be an error in 27 (INFERNO).

I am unsure about this one.  It seems that it could be a double definition or even a non-cryptic clue.

  1. SAFETY (my take)
The first part refers to the phrase SAFETY first.
The second part refers to the phrase health and SAFETY.

WITHOUT (unable to account for everything)
being in possession of=WITH, old hat=OUT
(the despite is just there for the surface?)
I also toyed with the despite=THO (though) but could not advance further.

    INFERNO
    Agree with the blog

    Thanks Pedrock and Pete.

  2. I do not understand how TOOL is a double definition (or how TOOL = ALSO)? I thought maybe “cryptic definition,” but I still did not see what “also” had to do with it.

  3. I agree with KVa@1 about SAFETY, but that clue is still a little weird. I, too, did really not understand INFERNO or WITHOUT.

  4. TOOL
I took it as TOO+L (many)
I have seen C standing for many in some puzzles. L is half as many but still ‘many’, I guess.
Def: bad workmen may blame it

    INFERNO
Looks like it should have been ‘conclude’ instead of ‘concluded’. Rest of the clues seems ok.

  5. Thanks Pedrock. I enjoyed clues like SHACKLE, TWO, DITHER, and TELEGRAPHED. I used an outside source for DODGEM, knowing this amusement only as ‘bumper cars’. I parsed TOOL like KVa @4 but I think using L or C as ‘many’ is a real stretch. Thanks Pete for the blog.

  6. WITHOUT
    This seems to work.
    With
    In spite of (Collins)
with all his talents, he was still humble

    despite being in possession of=WITH
    old hat=OUT (outdated)

  7. Lovely puzzle

My favourites were: ANIMATED, FAST-BREEDER, HERMIT CRAB, GIGABYTE

    Thanks Pedrock and Pete Maclean

  8. I came to the same conclusions as KVa on the questionable clues. Agree with Tony@5 about TOOL.

Similar to Pete, I did not find this overly challenging, but still enjoyable. NEW DELHI was my favourite – at last, a homophone that works!

    Thanks Pedrock and Pete

  9. Thanks for the blog, very enjoyable with very neat and concise clues .
INFERNO I just thought it was a misprint.
WITHOUT I had the same as KVa@1 but I took despite being used to provide the contrast . She is LACKING despite owning an old hat .
    TOOL I agree with KVa@4 .
SAFETY, I thought this was a very good clue, contrasting two common phrases , before and after.
FAST-BREEDER , the rabbits manage this but the reactors never worked.

  10. I parsed TOOL as a charade of TOO (also) + L (many) as well, bunged in SAFETY and WITHOUT with a shrug as I thought they had to be that from the definition, but I wasn’t entirely convinced by either wordplay, was hoping the blog would clarify.

SAFETY first and health & SAFETY, often rendered ‘elf.

I solved this yesterday travelling to pick up stuff for today’s May Fair, and got through it pretty swiftly.

Thank you to Pete Maclean and Pedrock.

  11. I had ABBE for 12a, with BE for the Bachelor of Engineering degree. A legitimate but less Swedish answer?

Favourite clue was 13a BLUEBOTTLE, but I was disappointed that there was no ECCLES. (You rotten swine, Pedrock. 🙂 )

Thanks Pedrock for the fun and Pete and KVa for the parsing help (KVa for 11a WITHOUT).

  12. Cellomaniac @11 – we don’t use BE for engineering degrees in the UK we use BEng (or MEng), and an education degree can be a BEd, so I discounted that option
