Adrian Bailey (not sure if he has a setting monicker) has kindly sent a couple of puzzles for the York S&B meet, even though he couldn’t make the event himself. This one could be said to be ‘on the money’… (For anyone who wasn’t there but would like to try the puzzle before reading the blog, it should be at this link here)
(Also, I had an advance copy of this, just in case anyone is thinking I have knocked the blog up on the Saturday evening, after a day of intense puzzling and drinking, and most likely a curry afterwards!…)
As with the first solve of any new (to me) setter, I found it a little hard to get onto AB’s wavelength at first, but once I was in the groove I enjoyed the ride…if that isn’t mixing too many metaphors…
There are two mini-themes, both around words in the grid. One is 6D CURRENCIES, where we have various coins of different currencies:
- MARKS
- CENTIMO
- PESO
- TIYN
- plus our own pre-decimal LSD, with PENNY and FARTHING
And 31A PENNY is also used in combination with several other entries, to make well-known words and phrases:
- penny BLACK (stamp)
- penny DREADFUL (cheap novel)
- penny-FARTHING (a high roller!)
- ‘Pennies from HEAVEN’ (song)
- ‘a penny for your THOUGHTS’ (phrase)
An impressive amount of thematic material to pack in, and some nice clues along the way – TROUSSEAU as a ‘lady’s match kit’; the ‘Tijuana brass’ for PESO; the NARCISSIST pleased with his reflection. Talking of which, 11A PLUTOCRAT is also topical, with ‘Trump’, ‘riot leader’ and dogs and cats in the surface read, ‘…they’re eading the cats…‘.
The submitted copy was a little rough around the edges, with a few typos and grammatical glitches, which I have tried to tidy up below, but these didn’t detract from the solving experience too much, and would no doubt have been smoothed out by an editor if this puzzle had been submitted for formal publication.
All in all, an enjoyable solve, with a couple of mini theme-ettes to wheedle out. My thanks to AB, in absentia, and I hope all is clear below.

Good crossword puzzle
Thanks for the blog. As a newcomer to this scene I foundit most helpful and appreciate the effort put into it.
Adrian Bailey
I loved the themed clues, teased the brain a bit. Thanks.
Many ingenious clues, e.g. trousseau, plutocrat. I struggled with rapt and aircon (toupe in clue should be toupee I think). Not sure about disciplinarian as a synonym for ascetic in clue for acetic. Had not encountered the word odah.
