Independent No. 11,937 by Tyrus

A grid from Tyrus to fire up a cold weekend.

No fireworks but after some hefty challenges this week that was no bad thing.

17/10 across was an early solve and made me wonder if there was a theme afoot, but despite another snooker reference none that I could see.

  1. My favourite crossword trick is the perimeter message especially when it is as helpful as it turned out to be today and there is no better exponent of this trick than Tyrus. Thanks for dropping by. Took a while to solve the grid but after I spotted the message and the clue for COITAL I knew I was being treated to a puzzle right off the top shelf. So no theme LC but a welcome message for Trump instead. Thanks Tyrus.

  2. ATTEND
    I thought lsiten=ATTEND
    in=AT (interchangeable at places, I guess)+to nurse=TEND

    TO AND FRO
out running from=RO (the outer letters of fROm removed?)

    Thanks Tyrus and Leedsclimber.

  3. The Masters Snooker starts tomorrow, ( Sunday 12th), with Judd Trump seeded 3. Not a clue-type I am fond of, i.e. very time-dependent. By tomorrow afternoon, it becomes otiose.
I can’t quite see the fodder for the anagram in 18(d), TO AND FRO. I’m also a bit agin clues wherein “woman” or similar produce a proper name, ( SUE/NERISSA). A bit weak.

TAURIC is a bit bizarro, ditto ECONUT.

Sorry for my quibbles, but I did enjoy this puzzle, and particularly SHAM ROCK, and TAKE TURNS.
Lots of other good stuff, too.

    Ta, Tyrus + Leedsclimber

  4. Agree with ENB @3 about tauric, a bit weird and made-up (but kinda neat nwst). Thanks both,, and Sofa@1; I’ll go and check the perimeter.

  5. [A sporting perimeter message. Don’t know Tyrus, so ? whether tongue-in-cheek, but hopefully next 4 years bring not too much damage]

  6. Many of the surfaces are about Judd’s namesake, the Orange Man: 19a, 24a, 27a, 3d, and especially 15d EGOMANIAC.
[Add to the Nina “…and bad luck to the other Trump the week after.” (Here’s a NERISSA who might agree.)]

  7. I’m another who has not yet made sense of TO AND FRO. ‘Fat Don’ gives us TO AND F. I wonder if ‘out running’ = ‘run out’ = RO? TAURIC is relating to a bull and it’s not that unreasonable to link it to the sign imo. KVa @2: I think I’m with the blogger on ATTEND as a straight double def rather than wordplay.

gif @5: Tyrus is Vlad in the Guardian. From which you will know, he is no fan of the orange buffoon. So any heartfelt intent in the perimeter message must apply to the snooker player!

Leedsclimber: ESAU was a hairy child from birth, becoming – famously – ‘an hairy man’. The goatskin was wrapped around his younger brother, Jacob, to fool his blind father, Isaac. Oh, the fun and games they had in Biblical times!

A few really tough ones in here – I was beaten by the nho XEROMA, even with the last three letters in place, plus the E. COITAL also beat me: my bad as I assumed we wouldn’t get two CO’s used in similar senses but, to be fair to Vlad, one id defined as ‘company’, the other as ‘firm’ so there is nothing wrong with that. I also deceived myself for a while with IDES for 1d being decapitated (h)IDES rather than (p)EELS

SHAMROCK, MOPING, RAIDER, TAKE TURNS and UNCLOAK were my faves.

    Thanks Cyrus and Leedsclimber

  8. 30D. Esau was deprived of his birthright by his twin brother Jacob who was the one who disguised himself with goat skins (to mimic Esau’s hairiness). See Genesis ch 27.

  9. GnF@5 … Judd Trump, pro snooker player not Elon’s pal, tho as mentioned above there are references to him elsewhere.

  10. Blast it. Even with Edit, I missed the autocorrect switching Tyrus to Cyrus at the end. I can’t blame it for my own error in referring to Vlad in my penultimate paragraph as a result of revealing his alter ego earlier. And I am more familiar with this setter in his G capacity so always think of him as Vlad (aka Tyrus)

  11. I had all the perimeter message except _ _ U _ _ , first thought was what were Spurs up to next week? FA Cup against Tamworth tomorrow wouldn’t require much luck, the North London Derby on Wednesday may though. Getting 17a put paid to that train of thought though.

    I had18d as Sofamore @11.

  12. Really enjoyed this puzzle, with some great surfaces for the shorter clues including NEWEST, SIN, WARM, ESAU, ETA.

  13. Good joke with the two Trumps. I fell for it until I came here, then Phew, that’s ok then. I was another one for (h)ides and that was after my first mistake entering 17/10 in the order or 10/17. Apart from that, much enjoyed. Favourites TAKE TURNS and EGOMANIAC. Thanks to Tyrus and Leedsclimber

  14. A surprisingly gentle Tyrus, although I was glad of the nina (which I spotted, unusually), as XEROMA wouldn’t have looked much like a word without it. Very much enjoyed, particularly TAKE TURNS.

    Thanks both.

  15. I thought the perimeter was going to be about Elon’s support for Donald, once I had X Twee and Ump with the clue for Tsarist being the extra hint. Thanks all.

  16. PostMark@7
    TO AND FRO
    Your parse seems correct.
(someone is) Out running=Run out=RO sounds fresh.
    ATTEND
    I was overthinking probably.

  17. Probably coincidence, but TORNADO was the nickname of another snooker player – I think it was Tony Drago.
I got badly held up at the end of this by putting in “unleash” for 21d. Slight stretch for the definition but the wordplay seemed solid – uncle without the c (caught) plus ash.
But didn’t spoil the enjoyment of the puzzle overall.
    Thanks to Tyrus and Leedsclimber

  18. Many thanks to Leedsclimber and all those who took the trouble to comment. Thanks also to Mike for scheduling this today.

PM@7 is right about ‘out running’ meaning ‘run out.’

  19. As I know Tyrus is Vlad in the Graun, I was almost giving up in the top left when I remembered his ‘bollocks to brexit’ in the perimeter in a past one in the Graun, then voila! I completed it. Thanks blogger and Vlad.

  20. Thanks Jim, was a little concerned about the perimeter until it twigged about judd and you were just playing us.
