Once again, Phi has brought a suite of mid-week puzzles to an end.
I found this to be quite a challenging puzzle, towards the hard end of the Phi difficulty spectrum, with long clues that took some time to unpick. I think that I got there in the end, although I needed to resort to Chambers more than is customary for me. True to form, I have spotted no theme here.
My favourite clues today are 21, for ingenuity in including so many references to sex; and 26, for smoothness of surface reading. The “policy expert” at 3 and the entry at 29 were both new to me.

23a was LOI and a case of insert consonants to make a plausible sounding word. I made a mess of organic chemistry so the meaning of organised was new to me. Tops though is the difference in pronunciation between belie and belief. I’m so glad I don’t have to teach English.
Thanks both.
Is there a nerve theme? Lumbar, cervical, trigeminal, triadic, olfactory and disc seems to fit in somewhere???
Cranial nerves? “…the olfactory nerve (I), the optic nerve (II), oculomotor nerve (III), trochlear nerve (IV), trigeminal nerve (V), abducens nerve (VI), facial nerve (VII),…”
Spinal nerve “These are grouped into the corresponding cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral and coccygeal regions of the spine.”
Thanks both. On the basis that three of the words forming part of the suggested theme were unknowns, this was never likely to be a great outing for me.
Took an age to remember the ex-channel Dave, and ditto the spud a 12a. Otherwise not much to scare the horses, ta Phi and RR.
… although the NH in in-depth was a bit out there …
Thanks both.
FrankieG @3/4 – you’ve got a nerve!
(quite a few, actually- well spotted)
