S&B at Parcel Yard

Posted on behalf of Simon Shepherd

I’m organising an informal S&B gathering at the Parcel Yard, King’s Cross on Saturday April 5, starting around midday until the last person goes home.

It’s partly because there hasn’t been one for a fair while, and partly in memory of our dear friend dirkybee, who left us last September.

  1. Thank you for posting this here, Simon. I’m very sorry not to be able to be there: it’s my choir concert and we have a rehearsal in the afternoon.

  2. Beak @3 – Sloggers and Betters / Bloggers and Setters – Crossword Setters and the bloggers who write up their offerings.

(I’m supposed to be a lunch on 5th April, starting at 12:30pm, around 90 minutes away, so if I get there it will be very late, sadly).

  3. Beak at #3 – S&Bs were originally for Bloggers and Setters, but these days they are open to anyone with a passing interest in cruciverbalism…my wife calls them my ‘cross-nerd’ get-togethers (;+>).
If you visit and/or comment on here, I’m sure you will be made welcome…
Unfortunately I can’t make this one, but will try to make the next one…

  4. Beak @3: I would thoroughly recommend. I attended one such in Nottingham as my first get together and it was lovely to meet a range of 225 folk – a few setters, a few bloggers and certainly plenty of ‘humble solvers’. The big do in York in October is great fun too – but a lot busier and with a different format. When I went to my first one of those, I was pleased to have broken the ice at the Nottingham do first. Sadly, London is a bit of a trek for me on a Saturday but I am sure it will be a very enjoyable event.

  5. What a wonderfully nice idea. Like Beak@3, I was/am in complete ignorance of the nature of these meet-ups. Very tempted to attend this one therefore, as Kings X is only a less than 50 minute nonstop train ride from where I live. Almost sounds like a username “masks off” event. As in a rather bizarre dream I had a while ago and spoke about then on the Fifteen Squared Guardian site…

  6. I’ve been wishing for another London-based meetup for years … sadly I can’t make this date for medical reasons but my very best wishes to all who do gather there. And yes, dear posterntoo@2, I too wish I could have spent some more time with dirkybee. A lovely lady whom I feel privileged to have met.

(and yes, Beak@5 ; I’m only an ‘umble solver but felt very welcome at the Parcel Yard sessions I went to. It’s great to met up with the other commenters as well as the setters who turn up.)

  7. I’ve been looking forward to another PY gathering for 5 years now. I had my train tickets for the 4th April 2020 gathering which was cancelled due to Covid-19.
Unfortunately, I’m on holiday somewhere in the Atlantic heading for Madeira on the 5th.

  8. bodycheetah @12 – that made me laugh. Attending one or another meeting with another bulletin board which regularly met up to encounter other axe-murderers off the internet* some regulars had t-shirts printed with their avatars. To work out who we were meeting, stuck in one pub and not recognising anyone, I started drawing something, with all the avatars who’d said they were going to attend climbing on board.

In my extensive experience of meeting random people off the internet, it’s usually easy to spot, and we’ve been know to ask anyone looking lost. Although outside Kew, someone looked very worried being asked if they were an axe-murderer … (Not helped by assuming we were looking for a woman, not the man he turned out to be.)

    * one of the attendees at some point had been told not to go to a meet, because that’s what they’d encounter, which stuck.

  9. If the top floor loft bar (aka the Io-FT bar) is open we will be up there.

Otherwise look around the first floor for a group of people without luggage!

I understand that the London Saturday solvers group may be there, but haven’t had that confirmed.
