Nottingham S&B Saturday 7th June

We have decided to organise another East Midlands S&B.

Two years ago, we had a really good afternoon at a pub by Trent Bridge. Unfortunately they have changed their terms which meant that we have had to look elsewhere.

We have booked The Mezz Lounge at Broadway, our local Independent Cinema with the option of spilling over into the Mezz Bar if needed. The venue allows dogs which we know will please at least two pairs of potential attendees. We have booked the room from 11:00 – 17:00.

There will be a choice of 2 options from a hot buffet – meat and vegetarian – £12 per head. However, it is also possible to order from the bar menu if you are concerned about other dietary requirements. If you do order but have to cancel within 14 days of the event (24th May), we are sorry but we would have to ask for payment. If you would like to see the bar menu it is available on http://www.broadway.org.uk/

Meat Option – beef lasagne with garlic bread and green salad

Vegetarian/Vegan/GF  Option – Vegetable tagine with savoury couscous

At this point, it would be useful to have an idea of numbers and whether you are interested in the buffet.

Bert is happy to offer another walking tour – approximately an hour. It will start at the Station and finish at Broadway so will be visiting some different places this year.

Looking forward to seeing everyone – it is open to all.

  1. Sounds good B&J put myself Cath and dog Jenny down as attendees, we’ll probably just use the menu rather than buffet but I’ll notify here if Cath decides otherwise

  2. Very much looking forward to it, and thanks for organising. I too will order from the menu.

    Peter/Pierre

  3. I will do my best to be there but will not be certain till nearer the date. I’ll probably order from the menu.
I note, btw, from the website that from April the Broadway will only accept card payments.

  4. Many thanks, B and J. Like Pierre, I’m very much looking forward to it, meeting friends old and new. I’m happy with the hot buffet, thanks.

  5. Count me in. Quite happy with the lasagne thanks. Well done for organising; I enjoyed this wee get together a lot when it was last done.

  6. &10

Thanks for the link. Google had failed me.

    For anyone else
S&B Literally Setters and Bloggers but usually expressed as Sloggers and Betters

  7. On my doorstep so count me in for a few beers. Won’t need feeding if you’re taking numbers for food.

Look forward to it, the last Midlands/Notts one was well attended!

  8. Thanks for organising this, Bert and Joyce. I intend to be there. The vegetarian buffet will be fine for me.

Thanks, Bert, but I think I’ll give the walking tour a miss – I know Nottingham pretty well after 46 years here!

  9. Thanks for organising, B&J – I’m planning to be there – just checking train tickets. I’m happy to go meat lasagne/buffet…looking forward to it!

  10. I’ve just checked out the Broadway and find that I was there in 2015, when I wrote a rather dismissive review on Pubs Galore (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/72627/). Attending this event will give me an opportunity to have a second look, as well as to meet or remeet some friends from 15 Squared. 😃

I won’t be requiring food or guided walk, thanks.

  11. I am, like Chicago sang in 1973, ‘feeling stronger every day’. But I will have to let yet another S&B pass me by as I still cannot stand on my own feet independently. I have a feeling, though, that my cryptic alter ego is keen on making his Broadway debut (if that’s all right with you). Have fun everyone and, of course, many thanks to B&J for organising this!

  12. On the day Andrew although if you cancel at the last moment we may need to contact you as we will have paid already!
Do you want to join the walking tour?

  13. Sadly we’ll have to withdraw as we’ll be busy getting our own pub up and running In Felixstowe. I’d love to host a small scale s&b at some point.

  14. I don’t know whether to call that sad or splendid news, Flashling – all the very best to you both in an exciting new venture! 🙂

  15. Many thanks for organising. Yes please, I plan to be there. The beef lasagne would be my choice. Please let me know how to pay.

  16. Jo – so glad you can join us. You pay us on the day. If for any reason you cancel within 14 days of the event we may need to contact you for payment as we have to pay beforehand!

  17. Hello. I haven’t posted my inane comments on here for ages, but I have been assiduously doing the crosswords and kid myself that I’m slowly getting better at it and, since I live in Nottingham, I might put my brave face on and come to this . . . but if I do, I will not need food. Thanks.

  18. flashling @33 That must be the Ferry Boat. Just thought I’d give you a name-check to alert any other cruciverbalists who are from the area. I’ll try to visit some time this summer once I have built up my walking capabilities again after two years more or less immobilised by a foot injury. Meanwhile, I hope it goes well.

  19. I’m not available, alas for continuing medical reasons. BOL to everybody and to Flashling for his new (ad)venture.

  20. Greetings Barry and Joyce.
Hope it’s not too late to join.
Walking tour sounds good. I’ll sort out my own food.

  21. A bit late notice, but I’m considering making the journey, staying overnight, as I enjoyed both Listener Setters’ Dinner and Azed Lunch over last few months and keen to meet crossword friends more regularly

  22. Won’t need the food, thanks. When will the walking tour be? Likely to do Forest Rec parkrun in morning.

  23. Bert will be contacting people beforehand but it will probably be 11:00 at Nottingham Station. It will depend on the different arrival times.

  24. This notice comes up as the first thing when i visit the fifteen-squared site which i do only occasionally. It seems to be rather self-centred as it does not explain what this meeting is or does- what is an S&B meeting? I live in the East Midlands so this or future meetings could be of interest if only i knew what it means!!

  25. Apologies Brendan Quinn – if you look at kenmac’s comment@10 there is a link which will explain things.

  26. Hi again Brendan – we have just checked. If you would like to join us, you can still pre-order one of the buffet options. Hope you can make it.

  27. Thanks Bert and Joyce for the link to the meaning of the abbreviation. Unfortunately this does not enlighten me as to what happens on an S&B day. I can see it is a social event for people interested in crosswords at some level but is it just informal eating, drinking and chat (all good things!) or are there usually any other activities apart from a guided walk? And is there still time to sign up if I do find out what it is?? And what level of crossword ability or obsession is the norm among people who take part?? I just do them, I dont set them.

  28. Hello, Brendan. I will save Bert and Joyce some admin time and let you know that essentially it is an informal eat drink and chat day where folk who like crosswords (or sometimes set them) can mingle and talk about crosswords if you like. But my experience of attending and organising previous events is that much more than crosswords gets talked about, which is part of the fun. Yes, there will be some crosswords to solve (from compilers who haven’t been published yet, often); no activities I know of other than the walk, unless the beer really kicks in; no minimum level of crossword ability required; and obsession can usually be found during the day somewhere in the room but is absolutely not a requirement. Come along and join us – it’s always welcoming and good fun.

  29. The Sloggers and Betters (from Bloggers and Setters) may be a slightly misleading title as it might seem to not mention a key group, ie solvers or anyone interested in cryptic crosswords, who are very much a part of these gatherings. Without solvers, there would be no crosswords.

  30. Sloggers and Betters could also be interpreted as Solvers – most of us have to slog away at a crossword and a few of us have got better at it so (sometimes) don’t need to slog.

  31. Bert here
If anyone else would like to join the walking tour on Saturday, we will be meeting at the Costa coffee booth in the concourse of Nottingham train station at 11.00. The tour will finish at Broadway around midday.
Please add a comment if you would like to join the walk and have not already registered an interest!

  32. Ali Cork here – ‘registering an interest ‘ Really looking forward to this. I’ll join you for the walking tour please. I’ll order from the menu.

  33. Hope it’s not too late to register an interest. Happy to order from the bar menu. I’d like to join the walking tour as well, please.

  34. Not too late to join us Rob – the more the merrier. There is a spare vegetable tagine if you would like it.
No problems joining the walking tour as well.

  35. Thanks everyone for helpful replies and encouraging invitations. I think I will be able to attend but a slight doubt due to unexpected possible visit by a daughter on that day (TBC) So if i can make it I will order (veg) food from bar unless the veg tagine is still on offer on the day! Will be on train so walking tour maybe good too but dont wait for me! I do know the way to the Broadway.

  36. Also popping along late to say that I intend to be there. Completely relaxed about food – if there’s a spare tagine going, I will help out (my favourite kind of helping out!), otherwise will do something else. Looking forward to it. 🙂

  37. I will definitely be attending now. The two-daughter visit is happening too but I can work around that. So I would like to join the walking tour from the station and look forward to meeting up tomorrow!

  38. Some information for anyone not able to get to Nottingham tomorrow: puzzles have been set by Dalibor, Exit, Postmark, Median, Egbert and Henri.
Blogs of the puzzles will be published after midnight on 8th June, each with a link to download the puzzle to solve at your leisure.

  39. Apologies, I can’t make it to the meet up. (I didn’t order food so no problem there.) Sorry to be missing people I’ve met before and those I’d been looking forward to meeting. Maybe another time.

  40. Hope you all have a lovely time, with better weather than we’re having in Devon right now!

  41. A big thank you to Bert and Joyce for organising the event. I wasn’t able to stay very long but I enjoyed meeting some of the regulars after having to miss S&Bs for a while. And thanks also to B&J for taking on the task of blogging all the puzzles – well done!

  42. Thanks to Bert &Joyce for organising and to Bert for the tour. Very enjoyable for a newbie to put faces to some familiar names and special thanks to Leonidas for helpful advice.

  43. Many thanks. Another enjoyable crossword event meeting up with some old friends (a shame several others unable to make it), making some new ones and putting a few faces to names. Thanks for walking tour as well as organising. I have a few photos, though mainly from walking tour and Indian meal some of us had in the evening. I’ll try to find somewhere to upload them.
