Twin has produced a puzzle for our stimulation and entertainment today.
I found this to be hard by Indy standards, and it required me to plug away for a considerable length of time. In the end, I needed to search Chambers to find the solution to the clever, if a tad convoluted, 24, which I then confirmed from the wordplay; Twin definitely had the last laugh on me today. I am relatively happy with my parsing, but confirmation of my reading of 8 and of 17 would be appreciated.
Despite being something of a slog, it afforded me no small measure of entertainment along the way. My favourite clues today were 2 and 5A, both for conciseness; 16 for smoothness of surface; and 30 for its misleading surface.

I saw 8 and 17 as you did RR. I had no idea how 24 parsed. It certainly is convoluted. I didn’t see ITAL(y) as the nation and really I consider ER to have been a figurehead not a leader.
Still, mustn’t grumble, the aggressive puppet raised a chortle.
Thanks Twin and RR.
Thanks both. Needed help with a couple, having forgotten DELAWARE exists, and being completely lost with TAMPER. NORM is easy if you know the novel, which I didn’t, and I also liked ASSUME for the same reasons as PeteHA3@1
Not my finest hour today. Defeated by RING SNAKE which was new to me. I was surprised by UP being present in the clue for 9a.
I guessed NORM once I had the crossers, and googled it with Agatha C to confirm – did not know that book.
Likewise guessed TAMPER, without seeing the parse – I’m not too keen on ‘spy’ for M; and ‘aware’ for ‘up’ in DELAWARE was a bit of a stretch.
I was misled by ‘article for Elle’ into thinking there had to be a ‘LA’ in the answer; tbh, the clue feels borderline unfair.
Liked FAILED, FEARFUL, NEEDLED, TOPSIDE, and CoD LARGESSE.
Thanks Twin & RR.
jvector @3. Wasn’t sure after your comment as to whether you cottoned on to Elle being a French Magazine.
One of those days. Got about a third done before giving up,
