Quite a few bits here beyond the aging ginf wit, to wit: altering Nordic in 9ac; subtracting from St Andrews in 15ac; hotel via NATO alphabet in 28ac, and shifting “out” up in shout in 23d. Not my brightest shot today, but enjoyed it ntl, cheers Solomon the wise and Turbolegs the swift.
I found this difficult with many clues that were easier to solve than parse, particularly the complex charades.
Liked OBI, WINDMILL, and ADEQUATE
Thanks Solomon, Turbolegs and Orc
Tricky, but got there in the end. Good to see the blog explain a couple of mysteries.
Loved nomadic, tennis, Sisyphean, Iron Age.
27a. I’m sure you are right turbolegs. Uk social security payments used to be made via girobank cheques
I hope you are not right about GIRO meaning social security payment. Not only is it something many non-Brits will not get, but it is too broad: akin to cluing “mouse” to mean “ANIMAL”
Somehow knew the term giro to be like the dole here. Probably picked it up from somewhere on Brit telly, The Bill, or Minder maybe. Or East Enders might be more likely, but it wasn’t on our watch list.
Cryptic crosswords I think originated in the UK and the FT is a UK newspaper. I think it’s ok that it uses UK references. Oh, and I didn’t get giro either until I saw the blog. It’s not supposed to be simple or even fair.
