As 2016 reaches its last day a no doubt topical puzzle from Eimi completes the Independent’s year of crosswords.
I always enjoy Eimi’s crosswords – they tend to have topical clues and this one as the old year dies is no exception. What a year to review in a mere 26 clues. The major tragedies of the year are all there where democracy defied logical thought in 18ac and 19ac – is this defined by 23ac I wonder. Two musical farewells in 10ac and 13ac, whilst two of my favourite musicians who have accompanied many a crossword solve over the years Keith Emerson and Greg Lake also joined the Hallelujah chorus this year.
As years go they don’t get much worse than 2016 so 1/9 ac to it and roll on 2017 where hopefully 17dn is not on the increase! Nor I would hope is 8dn but I suspect I may be wrong!
Thanks Eimi a fun solve as always – I do have the feeling 2017 may be even worse but there will always be crosswords to bury ones head in. A belated Merry Christmas to all setters, bloggers and readers and all the best for the year to come.

And it’s a pangram to boot.
Thanks for a brilliant end to the year.
Yet again a blog appears for a puzzle that isn’t up yet, at least for a U.K. iPhone user. O well, it’ll be there at 6am when I wake up, and I didn’t read the words, honest.
PaulA @2, it’s up if you know how to summon it (obviously not via the menu), which I often do when I want some up-to-date diversion over breakfast here in Australia.
Ah, not quite a pangram after all. No Q. So close.
Still, the expectation of it helped solve several clues.
Highly enjoyable. Fantastic clue for O CHRISTMAS TREE.
Thanks to Eimi& twenceslas, and a very happy 2017 to all
Nice one!
Thanks, Eimi and Twencelas

Thanks to S&B and best wishes to all.
Not sure whether the allusion to Robert Graves’ autobiography “Goodbye to All That” (1929) has been overlooked in the blog.
Best wishes to all from the Land Down Under and thanks to Eimi for the topical puzzle and twencelas for the blog.
Thanks to Twencelas and all commenters. The deaths in 2016 included the paper version of the Indy, but I hope you’ll agree that the puzzles in the online version are in robust good health. Happy New Year everyone.
