  1. Thanks Kairos and scchua.

I had more than one ‘little parsing problem’. Afraid I can’t help with 6d. I just assumed that HOB=lout in somebody’s vernacular (but not mine). I also didn’t know about the second meaning of INTENTION or the Old English ‘ea’.

These obscurities made it a bit more challenging than the usual Sunday fare, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. I especially liked the cryptic definition of DUODENA as ‘food processors’.

    Now for the Everyman…

  2. Good for a reasonably gentle Sunday afternoon solve. I liked the ‘food processors’ too, the quad def. for SMART and the wordplay for EASING. Chambers has ‘lout’ as one meaning for HOB (I’ve just looked it up), so I think your parsing for 6 is correct, including the ‘swear briefly’ as BLIN[D].

    Thanks to Kairos and scchua.

PS Fact for the day. A male ferret is a HOB. I didn’t know that.

  3. Nice puzzle that welcomed me into the solve, but had a sting in its tail and ultimately beat me with 11a/7d (the note wouldn’t come to mind and I couldn’t see through the clever ‘leading ladies’ device). Still, I enjoyed the puzzle, and was another who admired the super def for 13a. Many thanks to scchua for the blog and Kairos for the crossword.

  4. What swatty wrote.
Also I liked 13A because it made me feel clever, having heard of the duodenum. Baffled by a few, eg hobgoblin, so just right for a Sunday. My cod was actually 1A, which I got straight away- the only one I did!- for its black humour.
Many thanks to setter and blogger.

  5. The duodenum is named after from duodeni in twelves, its length being equivalent to the breadth of approximately twelve fingers. Possibly by an anatomist from Norfolk.

    Sorry.

  6. It all came out in the end with a little help from Chambers (dead tree version) and a bit of trouble parsing 6 and 23. I knew EA in EASING from my little list of 2-letter words for Scrabble.

    Thanks, Kairos and scchua.

  7. Many thanks to Scchua the blog and to all for the comments. If any of you are planning to be in London for Big Dave’s blog’s birthday bash at the Bridge, I may see you there.

  8. Have just completed this, having printed it off on Sunday and saved for later. What an absorbing and entertaining crossword! I did it over lunch and it certainly raised my spirits on a gloomy and very foggy day.

I liked many clues, among them 14a, with its four definitions, as well as 7d, and 21d (where I learned a new abbreviation — what would one do without Chambers?). The only problem I had with parsing was 23d.

Many appreciative thanks to Kairos and to Scchua.
