Site Response Times & Display Errors

Update: I am now confident that the response time issue will be resolved before next Monday (the extended page loading times are most prevalent at the beginning of the week) because the hosting company has now accepted that other accounts on the shared server are affecting its performance.

A number of people have mentioned that, since Tuesday morning, they been unable to access the site or have needed to refresh a page before it displays correctly (i.e. the home page has all the latest post summaries and individual posts have all the comments). Some server modifications were made on Monday evening to try to rectify, or at least reduce, the response time issue but the hosting company has informed me that these should not have caused the access/display problems. If you continue to have access or display problems please let me know either via email (admin{at}fifteensquared{dot}net) or by adding a comment below. I would also be interested in receiving details of any problems experienced during the last couple of days.

During the past three weeks there have been occasions when page loading times have been excessive, and this was particularly the case yesterday, for which my apologies. I have been regularly chasing our hosting company, urging them to find the cause of the problem and a solution so that the site remains at all times as fast as it is when working correctly.

I have received several emails today saying that post summaries are missing from the home page and/or not all of the comments can be seen when a particular blog is accessed. If you experience this problem, the solution is to clear your browser’s cache/history and then to revisit the site. I am assuming that this issue has been caused by the very poor response times yesterday but will flag it up to the hosting company in case there is another reason.

  1. Many thanks for all the work behind the scenes on this and the solution – much appreciated. I’d noticed it on occasion for a while, but it certainly reached a crescendo yesterday and although I was sure it was something Dormouse did, its good to know I was wrong and the admin are on it. Cheers.

  2. A relief for me too to learn that the slow loading times weren’t (for once) my computer being its usual annoying self. Thanks for looking into this – it’s much appreciated.

  3. And still this morning, pages are not automatically up-to-date. When I opened the home page this morning, the entries for today’s Independent and the Inquisitor were not showing until I hit the refresh button.

  4. If you click on ‘refresh’ either on the Home Page or the particular puzzle blog, the site refreshes itself with the latest version of whatever it is you want to see. You have to do this every time you access the site and or try to see if anyone else has commented, but it doesn’t take long and it is worth it.

  5. I am told the whole internet broke yesterday because of some glitch in Amazon Cloud services.

  6. Until just now I have not been able to access the latest Fifteensquared postings at all for a couple of days on my iPad. This 6is the first time I have had any such significant problem

  7. Since yesterday morning (Wednesday) the only problems I have had are the same as reported already: the home page has to be refreshed, and when I link to the Guardian blog for the day that too has to be refreshed. I think that is still the case.

Having to refresh is not a problem – it would just be nice when everything is hunky dory again.

Huge thanks for sticking with this problem. It is worth it for a site like this.

The Mad Hatter and March Hare say they are innocent – Dormouse must be to blame.

  8. Yes, the refresh problem still seems to be happening. Interestingly, when I went to the home page, it told me this entry had 10 comments but when I went here, the 10th wasn’t visible till I hit refresh.

  9. Yes I am still having to refresh each time on the laptop. Not able to do this on my cached link on my iPad. Let’s hope issues can be resolved as I am not always at home when I want to read the forum and I only take the iPad with me. Thank you for the efforts you are making on our behalf, Administrators. We realise now how much we have taken the fifteensquared site for granted.

  10. Still affecting me too – every previously visited page needs a manual refresh every time you return to it…

  11. Also on the home page it currently says 13 comments on the Nutmeg and when you click on the actual blog, there are 20 comments
