Azed 2,342

For the first time in three or four years I solved the Azed last Sunday. Whether this was due to luck or premonition is anybody’s guess, but I heard a couple of hours ago that the scheduled blogger would not be able to cover this puzzle.

Had I known this at the time, I would have made notes during the solve and would have been able to write up the parsing at leisure rather than in a rush. Instead I have had to rely on memory so please excuse any errors.

I did have a ? against 21ac and I now find that I cannot fully explain 27ac and 29ac. Rather than delay this post whilst I consider these further, I will leave it to others to enlighten me.

  1. Last week, I remember posting how difficult the previous week’s puzzle had been. I then sat down and solved this in about an hour, which is pretty good going for me.

I couldn’t work out the parsing of 21ac, either, but I had TAMINE for 29ac. The definition in Chambers includes the word “glazed”, which better fits the definition in the clue. IN meaning being marketed seems to make sense. The fabric is in this week.

I read 27ac the way you did: It takes all sorts to make a world.

  2. Thanks sidey
Had I had enough time to study Chambers in more detail, or a better recall of English lessons 50+ years ago, I might have got the ‘relative’ connection (there again I might not!).

  3. A pretty quick solve for Azed, perhaps only a little longer than some daily cryptics. A handful where I struggled with the parsing, which isn’t bad for me.
