Thanks Provis and scchua
I didn’t enjoy this as much as usual with Provis. Again I found the Quiptic much harder than the Rufus, not helped by a couple of initial wrong answers – I had AURAL for 15a (and thought it quite clever) and WELL-INFORMED for 9d, though I did wonder how to account for the E.
I didn’t like “ends of weedkiller” for ER – I had tried to work WR in. Defining PENDULUM as “It’s sleep inducing” seems a bit perverse, and I think the 40% “trick” is lazy.
Mostly quick and easy, except that I also tried to fit WR into 19a. Didn’t see ‘recurrent’ as a reversal indicator in 20d. Still not sure it works.
I liked the succinctness of ‘Hearing test’.
Thank you Provis and scchua.
Another AURAL here, and I also tried to fit WR into 19a – ‘elixir’ might have been better than ‘weedkiller’.
I keep forgetting ‘starting prices’ for ‘odds’…
Thought 5d was especially nice.
Pendulums are sleep inducing in hypnosis so I also liked the flavor of the clue.
Hi Scchua,
I want to say that I really appreciate the fact that you have fully parsed the clues here rather than simply stated the mechanism. Many of the folks on this site simply write ‘double definition’ or similar, next to a clue, which, if you are learning the skill of cryptics, often leaves you none the wiser about why love might be o for example.
It’s a big help.
Yours
Simon Forbes
