Independent 9,955 by Hoskins

Lots of trademark clues from Hoskins today (sex, drugs and drink) –  Bert did wonder whether the whole crossword had been written around 18d.

But what about the Queen, Hoskins? Has she complained about your clueing?

We are away at the moment so have limited access to wi-fi. We will respond to any errors or omissions when we can.

  1. Pretty straightforward until I got to my last 3: WAYFARER, STEEL GREY & EDIT SUITE which probably took as long as the rest put together.

I cannot find BAILOUT as one word. It is 2 in my Collins and either 2 or hyphenated in my Chambers. Having said that: writing this post on my IPad, the autocomplete came up with it so I guess it must be OK. Maybe the OED has it.

    Thanks to Hoskins and Bertandjoyce.

  2. Hoskins back on form!

18d could have been ‘mansion’ ….

Nothing to complain about, the opposite actually.

Many thanks to Bertandjoyce & Hoskins.

  3. No real problems although several clues took a while to crack.  We’d not come across ‘damn straight’ as equivalent to I’LL SAY, and ISSUELESS isn’t a word we’d use in everyday conversation.  And whilst EKMAN seemed obvious from the clue we had to google him to check.

    Thanks, Hoskins and B&J

  4. There are few setters who can make me this happy just by sitting down to do a crossword.

Had the same reaction as Sil @4 that we have the old Hoskins back – yay!  (Not so sure that 18d could have been MANSION though … )

Quite apart from the laugh, that clue reminded me of Dorothy Parker’s parrot Onan, so named because he spilled his seed on the ground.

    Many thanks Hoskins and Bertandjoyce.

  5. I suspect only Eccles and Harry could get 18d past the editor. Great clue but I wonder if it’s been done before in private eye.
