Clueing Technique

A message from Dean Mayer (Anax etc)

I’m running another live stream this Wednesday 17th October, from 4pm UK time. We won’t be building a crossword this time. Instead, it’s a chance to discuss and work on clueing technique. So if you have a clue or clues you’ve been working on and feel unsure about, this might be a good opportunity to get the thoughts of the cryptic-loving community.

I’d been thinking of a series looking at e.g. anagrams first, then charades, then whatever, but maybe a better approach is to be open to all approaches in one go.So please do drop by. The stream will be open to all. My Twitch channel is here: www . twitch . tv / deanothelastofus (just remove the spaces).

Hope to see you there!

  1. My apologies everyone. Please don’t set aside time specifically to watch the stream as there is a chance it won’t happen. I’ll try to keep the explanation as non-geeky as possible.

Like any software, Streamlabs OBS (which streams the broadcast to Twitch) gets occasional updates. Thanks to the most recent, it won’t recognise the desktop as a visible element. There’s just a black screen where it should show whatever applications – Crossword Compiler, Word etc – are open. Rummaging around the web reveals this problem isn’t uncommon and there are several suggested fixes… none of which has worked.

By all means keep the date in mind and check to see if the broadcast is live, but if it isn’t you’ll know why!

    All the best

    Dean

  2. Hi Dean. I hoped to watch your live compiling video but Twitch required me to subscribe which I didn’t want to do.  You mentioned that Twitch uploaded to YouTube after 14 days but I can’t find it.  Is it now on YouTube?

Also, at Derby the time before last, you told us of an online fictional story you were following which was very moving – about a man saving a teenage girl.  I can’t remember the title.  Can you remind me, please?

  3. Hi Jan

The Twitch subscription thing is just a facility to have a username, otherwise it’s impossible to participate in chat. As it is, I’m sorry to say I’ve had to cancel the broadcast because of a fault with the streaming software (an additional fault that cropped up only this evening means I can’t actually stream anything with audio – my mic is audible but nothing else). The previous stream is on YouTube here: youtube . com / watch?v=aedNe4p-tck&t=5560s – just delete the spaces.

The fictional story is actually a video game – no, don’t run! It’s called The Last Of Us and I thoroughly recommend finding a cinematic playthrough on YouTube. The story, dialogue, and acting are (as well as being incredibly moving) better than almost anything you’ll find in cinema. One reviewer called Ellie – one of the central characters – not just the best female character in gaming but possibly the best character in fiction.

  4. Thanks for that Dean.  I can’t access your previous stream but I have found The Last of Us and look forwward to watching all 6+ hours.
