Enjoyed this. There’s a bit of pairing here. VICTORIA & ALBERT; CHEESE & CRACKERS; ELEPHANT & CASTLE and ORKNEY & SHETLAND.
Thanks to Chalmie and scchua.
Whoops! I meant CHEESE & BISCUITS.
I enjoyed the word pairs too. I liked CH for taps in 8A and R and L for hands in 8D. ROENTGENS my favourite. Thanks Chalmie and scchua.
So wanted 6a to be HAZARD
Thanks, Chalmie, for the original clueing and smooth surfaces. And to scchua.
Thanks, scchua.
I considered trying to make all the across entries be partnerships, but decided that would be too much of a good/bad thing (according to taste).
This being my last appearance this year, I’ll take the opportunity to wish everyone whatever they would like to be wished at this time of year.
Beaten by four clues which l won’t name. Oh dear, got VICTORIA from ‘state’ but could not parse it, doh! Merry Christmas and happy new year Chalmie.
Thanks Chalmie and scchua
Nice crossword which took a bit longer than normal to finish, getting stuck for a while down in the bottom left corner where I’d inexplicably written in an unparsed GLAZE at 23d. I also failed to see the pairs.
Wasn’t expecting to see my home state feature at 1a and with the tricky word play to get it, it was amongst the last ones to go in. Finished in the SW corner with the unexpected FLIES OPEN, the fixed-up GRAVY and ORKNEY (which would have been helped if I’d noticed the pairing with SHETLAND).
Seasons greeting to you too Chalmie and thanks for the fun that you have provided again throughout the year.
Thanks to Chalmie and scchua. OGEN MELON was new to me (though gettable from the clues) but I failed with the ORKNEY-GRAVY combination and THESE.
