Sloggers & Betters York VI

An announcement by John Henderson:

Here’s my annual spring announcement, regarding what will be our sixth autumn S&B weekend get-together in York, dates: Friday evening 25th October to Sunday lunchtime 27th October with the main event at the Fox and Roman during the day on Saturday 26th. I hope to avoid a clash with the final of The Times Crossword Championships, which is held in London around that time, usually in early November (for updates, see the Crossword Event Calendar).

For those wishing to make a weekend of it, there will of course be the quizzical Ale Trail on the Friday night, and a “Recovery” session on the Sunday morning at the York Tap. Built into the recovery is an extra hour in bed due to the end of DST! The weekend also marks the end of school half-term week.

Unable to secure our usual places at Stableside due to a large block booking, I have provisionally reserved with managers Fiona and Tim a number of double and twin en-suite rooms at the family-run Wheatlands Lodge Hotel (75/85 Scarcroft Road, York YO24 1DB; Tel: 01904 654318; www.wheatlandslodge.co.uk) at £90 Bed & Breakfast (so £45pp if you don’t mind pairing up for the twins). The hotel is located very close to Tadcaster Road and 5 minutes from the City Walls. Please quote “S&B 2019” when booking. Note that these rates are very inexpensive compared to typical weekend hotel rates in York.

I urge you to book your places, here or elsewhere, as soon as possible (i.e. now) – this particular weekend looks for some reason to be much busier in York than in previous years!

For admin purposes, would you for now (a) please indicate below whether your attendance at Saturday’s main event (and those of other halves etc) is likely, and (b) say if you have booked a place at Wheatlands Lodge.

I’ll be back with a request for more definite details later in the year.

Thanks, everyone!
John

    hi John,

I’ll be there, unaccompanied, for both events; can’t wait.

I have made my own accommodation arrangements in The Bar Convent (90 quid a night B&B for single occupancy of a double room; not sure if any space left there but it looks like an interesting building and v handy for the station).

    all the best, Rob

Definitely in for the Saturday, but possibly just as a day trip.

I have just booked a room for the weekend (at a different hotel), so I am now in for both nights. Looking forward to it as usual!

Sorry – should have said – count me in for Friday evening, and all day Saturday. I’ll sort my own accommodation out.

Subject to the effects of age and decrepitude, Jennifer and I will be there on the Saturday. As usual, we will be travelling on the day, so no accommodation required.
    Best wishes,

  26. Rosy Hunt

Is there room for one more – York resident?

    Rosy

  27. John Bee

As another York resident (ish- just outside) there is plenty of space for locals too. I haven’t mentioned my intention to participate yet as this thread is mainly for those who need accommodation. I am sure JH will be along in a bit providing and looking for more info in a bit.

  28. Komornik

I’ve only just seen this posting. Friday to Sunday not possible for me, but I’d love to attend on the Saturday and arrange my trip somehow. I eat anything. Is there still room?

    Komorník

  29. Angus

My attendance at Saturday’s event is likely.  I will not be staying at the Wheatlands.

    Hi folks,

I’ll be making a further announcement this week regarding dietary requirements for the Friday and the Saturday events as well as updating attendance details.

I’m slightly confused that some have said that Wheatlands Lodge is full – it isn’t: there are rooms saved for those attending the Sloggers and Betters event, you just have to make this clear when enquiring.

    John

  31. Gary Cole

Hi john looking forward to it . My first time at this event . I’ve booked in at the Alhambra Court for Friday and Saturday nights so intending join in everything . Gary

  32. Gary Cole

BTW would appreciate if you could tell me where the start point (ie which pub) for the Friday night ale trail is .

  33. I hope to make a day trip to be there on the Saturday.
