  1. Missed out on GLANCE (didn’t know the mineral) and BAIL (easy on hindsight). Wasn’t convinced I had properly parsed 10a which is missing in the blog. I went for V (very small, i.e. abbrev. for very) + ARIES (stars) around TIE (held together with string). This last part suggests TIE=together with string.

    Thanks to Bradman and Turbolegs.

  2. Hi Hovis@1,

I had the same parsing as you – not sure why it didn’t transcribe over from the tool in to the blog. Thanks for pointing it out.

    Regards,

    TL

  3. Although fine as a puzzle, I cant help thinking as Bradman as a second label as compared with his (excellent) Pasquale in the Graun earlier this week.

  4. GROWLER and GLANCE went in as unknowns and I missed the parsing for ATE in 5d. Yes, a solid workout which needed a bit of thought, just as a cryptic crossword should.

Maybe not very exciting, but I liked CINQUE PORTS for the reminder of Sir Robert Menzies, the ex-Australian PM who was the Lord Warden back in the 60’s to ?70’s.

    Thanks to Bradman and Turbolegs

  5. Surely, doing without booze is “abstinence” – “abstention”
    means to withhold one’s vote.

  6. Great challenge for me this one. Managed three quarters of it then the white flag came out. Thanks for the clues and the solution here.

  7. Timothy B@6 – Chambers has the word with two meanings i.e. refrain from voting and staying away from alcohol.

    Regards,

    TL

  8. Thanks Bradman and Turbolegs

Finished filling the grid on this one a while ago, but wasn’t happy with GLANCE because I just couldn’t parse it – thinking that there was an insertion of an L (‘containing lead look’) or an N (containing lead’ – thinking pencil, but that would have been H anyway).  Eventually dawned that there might be a mineral GLANCE that contained lead and after looking it up saw that it was so. Derrh !

Did struggle with other parts, writing in ABSTINENCE initially at 23a and MENACING at 29a without being able to fully parse either of them until was able to correct the errors with SETTLER eventually.  Thought PRIDEFUL was more about being conceited but saw that there was another definition meaning ‘excited or jubilant’.  Did like the GROOVY clue.

Finished with RELIES (caught up in the misdirection) and that GLANCE as the last couple in.
