Independent 10,284 by Wire

Wire provides us with this weekend’s first challenge.

We recall that there have been comments in the past about a perceived lack of mathematical references in Indy puzzles. This one should make up for that!
There are lots of references in the clues and solutions to terms from trigonometry and geometry.
We had some difficulty with the parsing of 9d, but when the penny dropped, we wondered why.
Thanks to Wire for the enjoyment.

  1. Enjoyed this outing by Wire. Being an ex-mathematician, why wouldn’t I?

THROMBUS & XYLEM were both new to me but got them both.

Just to add to the maths theme, I find it interesting that TRIANGLE and INTEGRAL are anagrams.

    Thanks to Wire and Bertandjoyce.

  2. @hovis @1 – The anagrams were the central theme of a recent Boatman Genius puzzle, which included TRIANGLE, INTEGRAL, ALERTING, ALTERING, RELATING and TANGLIER.

  3. Didn’t know that. Once upon a time, I used to try the Genius but gave them up. If you add an S, you can get TRIANGLES, INTEGRALS & GNARLIEST which has cropped up on Countdown before (all 9 letter words).

  4. A nice offering from Wire that I actually found quite challenging.
Despite having a maths background, the ‘theme’ passed me by ….

In two clues (12ac and 24ac) I thought “it’s OK but I am not sure whether I like this”:
‘Metal’ leading to AG and just ‘number’ for X
Well, silver is a metal and X (=10) is a number, so there you are.
Of course, these things occur regularly, especially FE or AL for ‘metal’ and C or D for ‘many’.
No problem to get the solutions to these clues.
And that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? – however, I just don’t like these ‘sub-definitions’ very much.
End of my nitpickery! [if that’s a word but probably not]

Just one more question: how should I see ‘boarding’ in 18d’s EMBARGO?

    Enjoyable crossword.
Many thanks to Bertandjoyce and Wire.

  5. A bit of figure-ing (sorry!) out needed for this but we got it all.  We really liked NUMBSKULL with its link to TONSURE.

    Thanks, Wire and B&J

  6. Yes, Hovis @5, that’s how I eventually took it too.

However, if you board a bus, an airplane, a boat etc you are not going to sit on top of it.
Usually, ‘boarding’ is used as/for going inside something.
This here feels like: A=B and B=C but (unlike in maths) not A=C.
Some may disagree, I’m not totally convinced, though.
    Let’s call it quits.
