  1. Most of this went in steadily, though with a few hold-ups including the ‘Nigerian coins’ and having to do a (semi-) alphabet trawl for HOPS at the end. I wondered if ‘in bed’ for 2d referred to NARCISSUS in a horticultural sense.

I liked this, especially the bizarre idea of the BUM BLING at 1d!

Thanks and welcome to Moo, in this guise anyway if not in another, and to scchua

  2. Fun crossword, very enjoyable. BUM-BLING was hilarious and my clue of the day. Having TRUMP and TANGERINE in the same column was pretty funny too. I hope it was intentional.

    Thanks to all.

  3. Agree with Wordplodder about NARCISSUS Double def.
Long arm of coincidence no doubt but I was just reading Peter Ustinov’s memoirs in which, in the filming of one of his movies, a consultant military type was caught in a badly-managed explosion on set, which covered him in dust and extinguished his specially-imported cigarette. His reaction, Ustinov thought, showed great sang-froid. The colonel merely said, “Ruined my CONFOUNDED WEED”.
A good puzzle with plenty of smut and violence. Thanks to both.

  4. Another who parsed NARCISSUS as WordPlodder. Great debut with PHELPS and BONKER as my last two in. Is this a setter known by another pseudonym elsewhere?

    Thanks to Moo and scchua.

  5. Thanks Moo and scchua

I read ‘some dope’ as S(PEED) so I think I went OK … but I’m not very sure if dope includes amphetamine. Mike

  6. Thanks Moo and scchua

Great debut puzzle that took a while to get into until seeing the cd at 16a, after which the answers came steadily although not quickly.  Found myself grinning at the sassiness of a couple of the answers – in particularly with 1a / 1d that came midway through the solve and then 25a that came a bit later.

Was another who followed the Wordplodder school of parsing of 2d.

Finished with the cleverly defined IMPROVISE, the easy in retrospect but tricky beforehand PHELPS and WIRETAPPER (in which I originally had an unparsed and suspect FIREDAMPER, until a final check with a word finder showed it up for the rubbish that it was).
