  1. Good puzzle. Did not get DEAD LOSS and had trouble parsing a few especially CARDINAL.

    Particularly liked CAIRN my FOI.

Thanks for the blog scchua and to Pasquale

  2. I liked CLANNISH, MONSOON
NEW: Jet Harris as member of the Shadows (found this thanks to google).

    Thanks S+P

  3. Pasquale really can do anything. From an Azed to a quiptic (I dare say he does some Quicks as well), and this was one of the tidiest Quiptics we’ve had in a while.

I didn’t fully parse CARDINAL (my LOI, purely from the crossers), and enjoyed TIME SLOT and DEAD LOSS.

    Thanks for the blog, Scchua.

  4. Thanks Pasquale and scchua

Not faultless, in my opinion. HARRISON is not a very fair clue, as Jet Harris was a member of the Shadows for only a small fraction of their existence, and it was over 50 years ago. “residence” is doing double duty in 13a.

Otherwise, rather hard for a Quiptic.

  5. A nice mix of difficulty, so thanks Pasquale, though I’d echo muffin@7’s reservations about the Harris gk, and also felt that HELD BACK fitted as well as KEPT BACK for 6,21, though I of course realised that was wrong when 10’s answer didn’t fit. Thanks to scchua for the blog too.

  6. Apart from minor quibbles (Is a cardinal a priest? Is bless the same as worship?) I thought this was a well-judged Quiptic. There were only four Beatles so Harrison is eminently guessable without remembering Jet. [MINOR reminded me of the old French joke about the farmer who put a fence up to stop people working at the pit taking a short cut across his land but was arrested for detournement de mineurs.]

  7. Petert @9

Yes, there’s no problem guessing HARRISON from the crossers, but the parsing is impossible unless you remember that rather sad character who left the Shadows in 1962 after a dispute with the other members.

  8. As copmus @1 said, a pleasant surprise to see Pasquale in the Quiptic slot. I sailed through it with unexpected ease only to have my final ‘check all’ show that my too hastily entered LEFT BACK wasn’t the answer to 6, 21. There were a few unnecessary words in a couple of clues (‘on account of’ in 7a and ‘There will be’ in 25a), but otherwise nice and smooth. I had no problem with the WIWD clue for REST HOME, but I enjoy this sort of clue and can understand that others may not. Thanks to Pasquale and scchua.

  9. A very pleasant Quiptic.  Pasquale can indeed produce great puzzles at all levels.

In 1, 23 TIME SLOT, I think it’s not that doom meaning ruin can be one of the paths of destiny, but that doom can itself more generally mean destiny or LOT.

Many thanks both.  (Nice illustrations scchua.)

  10. Enjoyable crossword. I can see how HARRISON might be thought a little unfair, but as Petert points out, there are only four Beatles, so easily gettable. [There are innumerable “fifth Beatle” candidates, but that needn’t detain us.] Thanks Pasquale.

[Thanks also to Petert @9 for the French joke.]

  11. A very fair quiptic with nice clear clue indicators – really good for a beginner. 25a I’d associate Monsoon with rain rather than wind , but clear from the crossers.

    Thanks

  12. Petert @9

A priest may not be a cardinal, but a cardinal must be a priest. I agree that “bless” meaning “worship” is a stretch, though it could perhaps be argued that “worship” is its meaning in “bless the Lord, my soul” (a Taizé chant) and numerous similar examples.

  13. So, CARL (with DINA) wasn’t the lustful Roman after all (didn’t sound much like it!)

    Well balanced Quiptic, I thought.

I liked the clue for CLANNISH.

    Thanks Pasquale and scchua.

  14. Bless/worship raised a brow for me too… as did “having an audience”=live (a movie in a theater has an audience… is it “live”?). But otherwise found this a fine Quiptic.

Took 13a as full blown w=d (wplay equals defn) not just w>d (wplay contains defn), with “mother’s suffering” explaining why a REST HOME is “needed”.

WELL DONE to our setter, blogger, and commenters!

  15. Jet Harris is widely known to anyone with a knowledge of the sixties music scene. I think it’s a perfectly valid bit of GK and makes a change from all the Greek mythology so beloved by setters.

  16. Sorry, didn’t have time until today. Thought this was perfect, so thank you Pasquale and scchua. I do wish there was a way to encourage more new people who are looking at the site to use this as well as the cryptic.

  17. Jeremy Nicholas @18

I think you are defining a pretty small electorate. I remember Jet Harris and Tony Meehan’s “Diamonds”, but, then, I am pretty old.

I’ve just rewatched the BBC4 programme “The Shadows at Sixty” – a really lovely programme, they all seem so nice!
