S&B York 2021 – Friday 29th and Saturday 30th October 2021

A message from John Henderson:

I’ve had a number of enquiries about whether there will be a Sloggers and Betters event in York this year. The answer is: “Er…yes, probably”.

It’s of course too early to make firm arrangements. Things are bound to change in the next days, weeks and months – but there are certain aspects of the normal York weekend that I’ve ruled out, others that I’m gradually pencilling in. For example, I’m thinking of running the events of both Friday evening and Saturday daytime in and around the pubs and hotels near the racecourse. This area includes Stableside (our usual accommodation venue) and The Fox and Roman (our normal Saturday venue), and I’ve started making enquiries at the nearby Cross Keys (pub) and the Marriott and Holiday Inn (hotels) about availability as further function venues.

I will post updates as we go along and as restrictions are lifted/re-enforced, so watch this space – but it would be handy to have some idea of how many of you are interested. Please would you indicate in the thread below: (a) name(s) of interested parties; (b) likely participation (or not) on Friday evening; (c) likely participation (or not) on Saturday afternoon; (d) whether you have booked into Stableside. On which subject …

For those wishing to stay at Stableside (Stableside at York Racecourse, Tadcaster Road, York YO24 1QG: 01904 709174), I have reserved the rooms in the main block, which are now all fully en suite, thanks to the extensive work that’s been taking place over the lockdown period. The rates are consequently a little higher than before, but still very competitive for York: £65 per night single and £110 per night double, room only. Breakfasts are available but paid for separately by card – the venue is now cash-free. Please book directly with Fay either by phone or by emailing fay.waudby@yorkracecourse.co.uk, quoting “S&B 2021”. You will be charged a deposit of £10 per person, but this will be refunded in the event of another lockdown, or transferable to a future event.

Thanks everyone, hope to see you later in the year!

John

  1. Definitely interested, but I have a feeling this would clash with a trip away on the weekend(s) of 29/30th October and 5/6th November. Otherwise, I’m in.

  2. Both Cath and I and probably Jenny pup. Both Friday and Sat will almost certainly go Stableside.

  3. Definitely up for this, John!

  9. ARGH! My diary has just reminded me that I’m on a 3-day piano workshop near Ipswich that weekend.

Would be lovely to see a ‘Southern’ version later in the year/early next?

  10. It’s unlikely that I shall be able to attend this year as Jennifer’s health has deteriorated seriously and she has numerous difficulties. If things change I’ll let you know.
I will be very disappointed to miss out as I have enjoyed meeting up with everybody over the years.

  11. I’m definitely up for it, subject to my current health problems being sorted out by then. I’ll confirm later.

  16. The title of this thread implies that those attending will either be setters or bloggers. Can you please confirm that those who merely comment below the line are also welcome? I’m asking not so much for myself (I was thinking of just turning up anyway and blagging it) as for other frequent commenters who might be a little shy.

    Assuming that I’m welcome:

    b) no
    c) yes
    d) no

  17. @31 Absolutely commenters and lurkers are welcome. Just don’t expect it to be about crosswords. Well a bit, but it’s mostly a social gathering amongst folks with a common interest. But it’s mostly beer tbh.

  18. Thanks Flashling. I guessed that would be the case but it’s good to have it clarified.

  28. Just spotted my typo (entry 45)How embarrassing ,especially in the context of what this gathering is all about ! Ah well nobody’s infallible !

  29. Ah, my wife’s birthday weekend, as normal. She’s a-number-ending-in-zero years old this time around, so it’s more than my life’s worth to be in York. Hope everyone has a good time, and perhaps see you all next year.

  30. Unfortunately I’m no longer able to come to York, more’s the pity.

I hope that all who do make it have a great time: I’ll raise a glass or two in your general direction.

I’ve cancelled my booking at Stableside.
