  1. A light and pleasant Sunday puzzle which nicely compensates for a dark and nasty day.

Full marks to the setter for the brevity of the clueing. DUTCH ELM DISEASE and LATERAL THINKING were my top two.

Many thanks to Tees and to scchua.

  2. This took me a while to get going, partly because I found the 4 x fifteen letter across answers hard to crack. Not in good form as I didn’t understand the ‘dotty characters’ in 6d either; seems obvious now of course.

Favourites were working out the parsing of MARXIST-LENINIST and LATERAL THINKING (v. appropriate). I’d forgotten it today but I’ll try to remember the ‘Icelandic parliament’ for next time – some hope I’m afraid.

    Thanks to Tees and scchua

  3. Like WordPlodder @2 I really struggled with this (though the ‘dotty characters’ at 6D was my second one in) and I needed to consult the wordlist several times. 20A was very clever, though it was my last one in! Thanks Tees and Scchua.

  4. One definition slightly surprised me today, leading to some learning. I’ve always thought a CARTEL was a business grouping and I read that the word has two roots: the Italian cartello for an agreement between warring nations, typically regarding treatment of prisoners, from the 1690’s and then the German Kartell, first used in 1846 to describe efforts to standardise tariffs and standards between railway companies.

I’ll also confess to raising half an eyebrow at hope for ambition, feeling that the latter has a certain element of planfulness but I guess aspiration covers both.

I found the long ones challenging Like WordPlodder but also thoroughly satisfying to crack – particularly MARXIST-LENINIST although LATERAL THINKING probably takes the COTD for the remarkable inclusion of the Icelandic parliament. Aren’t there some odd words out there for political assemblies? Diet, Tynwald, Dail, Seym, Duma…

I also ticked SCHOOL, FIJI for the dotty device, ESPALIER for the splendidly disguised definition and HELLO for the clever removal. And how nice to see another OUNCE (in both puzzle and blog); it’s interesting, considering they are both Himalayan and both bywords for elusiveness that ounces and Yetis appear so often in crosswords.

    Thanks Tees and scchua

  5. Found this a little tricky in places and I did have to look up both the Icelandic parliament and the aircraft enclosure – neither of which I’m likely to remember!
Plenty of good stuff and my top two were DUTCH ELM DISEASE & HELLO.

Thanks to Tees and to scchua for the review.

  6. We also found this a little tricky in places, needing a bit of 23. We did know the Althing, though (one of us having visited Iceland many years ago). 12ac held out on us for ages as we kept thinking the killer in the wood was a character from some dark fairytale – a real pennydrop moment when we got the answer.
Postmak@5: Chambers Compact Thesaurus has hope as a synonym for ambition.
    Thanks, Tees and scchua.

  7. Good puzzle. Found it quite tricky & needed 3 letter reveals to finish. Couldn’t parse one or two as well.
    Thanks all

  8. Thanks Tees, I solved this very slowly and I was quite satisfied as the unknowns revealed themselves. Favourites included FIJI, NEEP, and HELLO. I played “guess then parse” with the 4 long ones — it worked pretty well. Thanks scchua for the blog.
