Puzzles set by Italicus have appeared a few times over the past three or four years but he/she is not one of the regular setters.
There was a clear nautical theme in today’s entries and clues with a strong nod towards the role of pirates on the ocean wave. As with many Independent puzzles, it was not necessary to be aware of the theme to solve the clues.
I thought there were some good surfaces to many of the clues – ones that stood out for me were the clues for SPECTRUM, PERSPIRE, SOLITARY and SHIVER ME TIMBERS,

Thoroughly enjoyable, start to finish, and – not for the first time – a vague sense of coincidence with the puzzle in the G. I share favourites with our blogger and would add BOXING, DOUBLE CHECK and KEELHAUL to the list. Splendid Tuesday offering.
Thanks Italicus and duncan
PostMark @1. There is also a strange sense of coincidence with today’s FT, but in a different way. A quick check also revealed that they both share the same grid – very weird.
This was great fun and not too taxing with excellent clueing and smooth surfaces.
Another coincidence – I had never heard of KEELHAUL until it turned up in another crossword yesterday.
Duncan’s choice of top clues will do for me too.
Many thanks to Italicus and to Duncan.
RD @3: I noticed that too – are you thinking of Rookie Corner? I seem to be encountering coincidences all over the place at the moment!
Hovis @2: as I’ve confessed before, the FT is not a regular experience for me but it is always weird when the wheels of the universe turn in such a way as to create these occasional alignments. Though quite why the heavenly powers should choose to demonstrate their omnipotence by fiddling with the results of British crosswords, I do not know.
PostMark @4. Yes, it was in Big Dave’s Rookie Corner puzzle yesterday.
Very enjoyable. A real treasure. Thanks, both.
Aaargh Jim Lad!
Jolly good fun-needed lime juice with the rum
Nice to see Italicus again and with a theme that required no specialist knowledge. Only problem I had was with JIBE – too busy digging in the ground!
Top clue for me was SHIVER ME TIMBERS – goodness knows how long it took to assemble the wordplay for that one.
Many thanks to Italicus and also to Duncan for the review.
Many thanks to Duncan for his highly detailed blog, and to everyone else for their kind comments. Always nice to know that I have raised a few smiles.
We fell at the final hurdle with aweigh defeating us completely after an otherwise fast solve.
