Independent 11,265 by Serpent

Hi everyone.  Serpent never fails to delight and this got my day off to a very good start indeed.  Thanks Serpent!

I thought that the hidden clues were nicely done, and have to applaud the clever ROSEBOWL in 4d.  In fact, many of the down clues made it onto my shortlist for special mention: 8, 16, 20, and more.

Serpent likes to include some extra feature of interest in the grid for solvers to find, but I am found wanting today as I can’t see a thing.  Over to you! …

… and Hovis @1 has it: down answers contain FEATHERED FRIENDS.

Definitions are underlined in the clues below.  In the explanations, quoted indicators are in italics, explicit [deletions] are in square brackets, and I’ve capitalised and emboldened letters which appear in the ANSWER.  For clarity, I omit most link words and some juxtaposition indicators.

  1. Hovis@3 – I had the same thought about 7d, but decided I preferred “close to” as a single-use indicator.

Birds of a feather are indeed flocking together: I counted three (French?) hens and found pairs of teals and emus – always good to see in crosswords – as well as anis, which I know from barred puzzles. And two tits (the ideal number, I’d say).

  2. Didn’t know ‘ani’, so thanks for filling the missing birds from my effort, Kitty. Must remember that for the future.

  3. Easier than usual to for Serpent, I thought, though needed two sessions to complete, the second over coffee in ‘Spoons. Thanks Serpent and Kitty.

  4. An enjoyable solve, requiring only to confirm in Chambers what we were alsmost certain of, SHEA NUT. But we wasted a lot of time trying to spot a non-existen nina in the unches – never thought to look for elusive FEATHERED FRIENDS. Oh well …
    Thanks, Serpent, Kitty and Hovis.

  5. Well spotted Hovis. A total miss for me but now that you point it out I think ERNE, RUFF and MOA are lurking too…and a backward MINA if that isn’t stretching things.

A pleasant Saturday morning distraction. Thanks to Serpent and Kitty.

  6. I got all of those, Salad (and they are all marked up in Kitty’s blog). It was just GRANITE & ANIMATION where I fell short, not knowing ANI.

  7. Thanks Serpent for an enjoyable crossword. I found this on the easy end of Serpent’s spectrum but no less clever. Like allan_c @8 I looked at the unches for a nina and never thought to look for FEATHERED FRIENDS who were hiding in plain sight. Thanks Kitty for the blog.

  8. Great puzzle and blog. How many times has Hovis provided that extra bit of interpretation? Respect. And a name check for Salad, too.
